Some customers of ours who design/build eateries/bars in Chicago recently installed a tree in the middle of what will be the dinning area of a new establishment.

A good sized Mulberry from the alley behind the building was the one bound for glory. The bark was peeled off months ahead of actually cutting the tree, and they are planning on sandblasting and finishing the trunk.

here is more information -

The Medici, to be located at the former site of Other Ports and the Village, will be a new sit-down restaurant space complete with a large tree that serves as structural support for the building. The new building will replicate the early twentieth century building that burned in the 1980s and was replaced by Other Ports. The storefront of the building to the west, formerly the Village, will be restored to its 1940s façade and will serve as the bakery portion of the Medici development.

This development is an extension of a successful restaurant in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, known for its pizza and student-friendly atmosphere. The project was developed by Steinbach Inc., in partnership with the Town of Normal. Construction began in August 2006 and is anticipated to complete in summer of 2007
