Tree Elevator

Hey guys, I thought you might appreciate this video I made at the '10 PNW ISA conference Field Day. We made an elevator system to bring participants into the canopy of an old growth Doug-fir in Point Defiance Park in Tacoma. The participants were accompanied by a forest ecologist to learn about the canopy ecosystem and big tree crown structure while aloft.
I insisted on shooting the headcam footage before we broke down the system at the end of the day.
The music is SAFE-Loosen Up
Enjoy!

Will, I don't recall if it was you or Brian (think Brian) that I spoke to after your presentation, and hearing that you guys were a bit nervous, not being regular speakers/ presenters to large groups, especially pro arbo's. Just wanted to say again that you guys put on a great presentation, and while the hearts may have been pumping hard, you guys didn't show it! I think that it is safe to say that everyone in the room enjoyed it.

Any good leads on new champions? I think that a number of people in the room, myself included, wanted to tell you about big trees they'd seen.

I'll watch the video later, I have a rental on a wood splitter ticking down, and the weather is supposed to be hitting us in the PNW today.

Your ATG video, on the website is cool.

Sean, I think it was maybe Brian you talked to although I was definitely feeling the same. We give a lot of presentations, but mostly to smaller groups of people who we don't know. Quite different to talk to a room full of several hundred of your peers! Thanks for the kind words; I was also happy with how it went, though that could have just been the massive relief I felt that it was over.

maarten, the elevator system is really quite simple. Basically you hang a pulley high in a tree, tie the line into a loop, then attach two people such that one goes up as another goes down. The only difficult parts are threading the line so that it's free of obstructions and creating convenient anchors for the line when folks switch out of the system. It's a good way to bring people up into the tree quickly, and also good for folks who are incapable of getting to the top on their own steam.

Shane- yeah you got a good cameo but I think your beard stole the show.

Thanks to the crew for putting this event on--great fun !

It was novel being a spectator at an old growth climb. It was a pleasure to be the one who pays the money and takes the chances for a change.

After all the group climbs, this one had it's own distinct flavor that made it special. A very respectful experience, allowing the interpretation of the narrator riding alongside each rider in tandem ascent of discovery.

Here's my video of the Mountaineers tree. Taken with a Sony HX1 (highly recommended camera) from the ground across Point Defiance Drive.

Re: Another video

One more video of the elevator, taken this time with my Samsung Galaxy phone. An experiment at direct uploading with the phone's Android file sharing utility. Pretty seamless.

This time, it is of Seattle Consulting Arborist Brian Gilles. The posting is actually a bribe, in an attempt to get him to cut loose with a disc of the pics he took of my ascent. Thanks! (in advance).
