Tree Climbing

What knot would you recommend for the main rope to anchor to my carabiner going to my harness? Would that be the same knot I would use to connect my split tail to my carabiner. Also which friction hitch would you recommend?

Sounds like you are going to start off climbing DdRT (Doubled Rope Technique). Some resources to get you started, mostly pdfs:

REI will have nothing that will work as a hitch cord or split tail, all their stuff is static, will not work as a hitch cord for tree climbing. Look at the arborist supply web sites for the correct cordage for hitch cords.

If you're asking questions like what hitch should I use to attach to a carabiner you need to be looking at Jepson's book and Jenkin's climbing basics DVD, it's really not safe for people on the forum to try and teach you from zero. A little up front research will save you a lot of trouble and will make it easier for folks on the forum to help you out.

Tie tail with your anchor being a clove hitch and the friction hitch being a Blakes hitch.

That's the way I did it with DdRT. Well that is, until I moved to split tails and eye-2-eye prussiks. But the best way, IMHO, is to learn the midline clove hitch (it's so fast), clip that into biner, with maybe a 16" tail, and tie your Blakes' Hitch with that tail. And maybe adjust tail length to your liking. I used to prefer a long bridge between my clove hitch and blakes'. It was usually just a little shorter than the Blakes' Hitch being out of reach. I felt like I had better progress with each pull that way. Cool thing about attaching your rope with a clove hitch is that when you want a shorter "hitch bridge", the clove is easily adjustable without untying anything.

One thing to be aware of, I believe you said your rope is a 9.5mm dynamic rope, there is no way you can use it to tie a Blake's Hitch, the bend radius of a 9.5mm dynamic line is not supple enough for the rope to work that way. Ropes designed and constructed for arborist use are extremely supple so that a Blakes for example will work.

I just ordered the DVD. Is it necessary to get the book aslo or will the DVD suffice?

Cool, like Monkeylove said, get the book too. The Jepson book is more of a reference including a wide range of hitches, knots, techniques etc., whereas the DVD is a grounding in safe climbing protocol using a simple and effective tree climbing system.
