Tree Buzz Interactive Arb Cert Study Game

So I've finally signed up for the ISA Exam. My test date is fast approaching and reading the study guide is a drag. So let's play a game. Here is how it goes... Post a sample exam question, perhaps the question that stumped yourself or a question that relates to a conversation or situation that occurred at work. To keep the game going the Buzzer that post the answer should follow up with another question. Ladies and Gentlemen, rack your Brains!

Q: The major plant hormone groups include...

A: auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, ethylene, and abscisic acid

Q: Define Phototropism

Nobody else wants to help TimberJack study for his cert test? I thought we promoted that kind of thing here?

I'll answer in the a.m. If nothing by then.

Unfortunately, as benign as the request is, and as much as we all hope TJ crushes the test when he takes it, every ISA Certified Arborist has signed this ethics agreement: http://www.isa-arbor.com/Certification/resources/cert_Ethics_CACodeofEthics.pdf

In signing it, we have all agreed to "Maintain the security of ISA examination information and materials, including the prevention of unauthorized disclosures of test information."

All of which means we're not supposed to share that tough question that stumped us when we were taking the test, with a buddy who's getting ready to take it.

Thanks for point out my oversight. I was only trying to make some fun of this studying as I find being on the buzz much more entertaining then actually studying. I surely wasn't trying to or get any else to violate the ISA Code of Ethics. Thanks for the help and well wishes thus far and I will be sure to keep y'all posted on how I do on the examination.

would it still violate the ethics if the Q and A were not direct questions from the test? If I ask some random question like "How to tie a bowline?" and a similar question showed up on the test would that be a violation? Also are the questions in the study guide under lock and key as well? The study guide gives you the answers to it's self test quiz except for the "challenge questions." Is it a violation of copy right laws?

I understand the point of keeping the test under wraps, but I do think it's bogus that you can't help some one study by playing like this. The questions that have been asked are out of the study guide right? I don't see how defining Transpiration is cheating. Publishing the exact question from the test, and expecting an answer isn't cool. It is best to understand the process of evapro-transporatation instead of memorizing that it's water evaporating out of the leaves.

The sample questions in the study guide are available to anyone. CEU Quiz questions from issues of Arborist News are also presented in the same multiple choice format as the test, and are a good way to get your brain into "multiple choice/process of elimination" mode.

If you're a member of ISA international, you can review the CEU quizzes online. Just don't submit the answers until after you've become certified and are actually eligible to earn the CEU's.

TimberJack, we're all rooting for you, and I know you're going to dominate that test! Looking forward to you posting your success!

Good advice re taking CEU tests to study, then submitting later for credit.

I agree; Richard's singular and unofficial interpretation of that seems a tad overboard. If we shared a photocopy of that question, that would be wrong. If we anecdotally relate what was in a question, there is no ethical issue.

Time to lighten up a little here.

"Q: Desribe the symbiotic relationship between Mycorrhizae and the tree roots"

A: When mycorrhizal fungi colonise (or "infect", in the pathogenic mindset of pathologists) roots, structures called mycorrhizae ('fungus-roots') are formed. The fungus harvests water and nutrients, which are taken up by the root, and the tree.

Where it really gets interesting: when Armillaria morphs from a mycorrhizal symbiont harvesting nutrients, to an associate ("pathogen") harvesting sapwood, which is then compartmentalised by the tree. But that comes later...
