I'm looking for opinions on the drawbacks or if it's a good idea to build a grab bar/handle to place above the block near your tie in point. I'm thinking if it had a strong strap it could prevent splitting and give a easy, hopefully safe, place to grab the bucking stem wobbling tree.

Boreality, Not trying to sound like a smart-alec but if the spar is bucking much I think you need to reevaluate HOW you are doing the work more than invent a portable handhold. In normal circumstances splitting the spar should not be a worry and after the top comes off the upper end of the spar is "handy" for holding during a minor gyration or 3.

I think it'd have some use, but not much.

Surely a ratchet strap would serve the same purpose, though.

The splitting doesn't seem like that much of a worry. I just got that from the illustration in the Sherrill catalog. And I see the handle as problem with the ropes getting tangled on it, or something to cause a trip to the dentist. But I may try some variation. And on a similar but different topic, anyone heard of tree boarding. A skateboard with a rope through a hole in the middle, and a water ski handle above. It looks like fun but rather tough on the trees.

could you please xplain this further....
I am intrigued...

It's like a swing. They pump with their legs, get the rope swinging, then hang on the handle and do tricks at the apex of the swing. Just the skateboard deck of course. A half pipe without the pipe. Kids these days, eh.

Sorry Jamin Mayer, that technology is beyond my abilities. The kids that started this are Canadian and they had a web site. I would have posted a link but I couldn't find their site. I'll have another look, after work.

I googled for 20 minutes, couldn't find anything, so short of a demonstration, the explanation above is the best I can do. I guess the sport didn't catch on, and the trees can again live in peace, I shouldn't have brought it up. It is a way to test branch attachments I suppose.
