Tom! Help!

Tom, there was talk that the site would work with Tapatalk. Is that still in the works or not going to happen? I think that would solve Frax's problem.

The problems I've been having would probably be solved by it too as they're all on mobile devices. Let me know if you need info on them.

I use Swype all the time.
I do not have a blue scroll bar in the window as you do
in your screen shot.

It would appear that this was Frax's last post ever. (July 12th, 2014) And by the way, I am posting this response from my Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0. It is not a phone, but it has all of the same features minus the cellular phone technology chip. Frax was more observant than I am; I never had noticed that this issue pops up after six lines of text. I do not know off the top of my head what version of the Android operating system this device uses. I'll need to research the question and get back to people if it is an item of interest for some reason.

Ok, at this point, I think I probably have at least six lines of text entered. For the record, I do believe that the problems Frax was experiencing also happen to me on a consistant basis, still. As long as I keep typing off the end of my post, I have no problems. But the second I try to move my cursor off of the end of my current position, to a point higher up in this post, I will almost completely lose any ability to put my cursor back at the bottom of the post. The last line or couple of lines disappear off of the bottom of the text box. There is no "sliding bar" on the right side of the screen to grab onto to make the bottom of the post accessible. There are also no "arrow" keys present on the Android keyboard to provide this capability.

It is, in my humble opinion, a software glitch relating to the text entry box. Maybe Frax never spelled out how this glitch presents itself, but for me, I can use my finger tip to drag the text up and down to get to whatever part of my post I want to, EXCEPT for the bottom of the post, after I've moved my cursor off of the bottom one time. The way this presents itself is that I'll try to scroll to the bottom, but if I do it slowly and incrementally, the bottom line will just never appear; it will "bounce" my input box up to the 2nd to the last line. If I try to use more force and speed when I swipe, it will act like I'm using a superball and bounce me off the bottom rapidly and send me all the way back up to the top of my post.

Ok, at this point, I'm going to try to go back to the top of this long-winded post to re-read or check on something that I've written. (Just for the sake of this demonstration). Once I do, I do not expect to be able to add any more text at the bottom without great difficulty. I'll draw a line here as a demarcation point.

Ok, this test did show that I was entirely unable to get my cursor back down to the end of my dashed demarcation line. It would only allow the cursor to go as far as my last written sentence, and no further. The dashed line remained off screen and out of reach entirely.

Frax was not crazy, the glitch does still exist. I just keep the glitch in mind, and am limited by it, because I know that I cannot go back to check what I've already written when working off of my handheld computer. If it is really serious, I'll log in with a laptop later when I have the opportunity, to try to fix it or add to it.

If Frax was participating in this forum exclusivly on her handheld device, with no or little access to a laptop or desktop computer, this glitch would just be absolutely maddening.

Which explains why she is probably gone for good. No offence intended, just reporting the facts from the field.

It is entirely possible that this is a glitch in the Android operating system, and that it has nothing to do with the way that your website is constructed. The same issue exists on the other arb forum that I participate in. Now that I think of it, that fact begins to argue strongly in favor of a problem with the operating system.

There are one or two more online forums that I mostly lurk on but do not participate in very much. One of the two I may need to get a new password in order to post there. All of this might take me a day or two. If it turns out that I can attempt to create posts in four different forums, and that the glitch gets reproduced each and every time, then that would seem to me to let the forums off of the hook, and put the responsibility squarely on the shoulders of the software writers for the operating system.

I do not have a program that produces a screen shot for my handheld computer, and even if I did, I don't think it would help, because nothing unusual looking would show up on an individual screen shot. It would take video footage to show what is happening.

I'll do my thing with trying to post in other forums, and come back to this thread later to post my results.

Hi Tim

Which web browser do you use?
Can you reproduce the issue again? I've just upgraded the forum software to the latest version.

I wish I knew what you guys were so excited about.

I'm not sure what you mean by this, frashdog. This is the opposite of excitement. It is an attempt to try to work through to a solution to a thorny problem that has potentially already cost this forum a member who seemed to be of value to other members.

I find it really nice that the folks running this forum actually care about a problem that is affecting a portion of its membership. They have no real way of knowing how many people are affected by this, or how many people give up on trying to participate as a result of this issue. Which means it could be a small problem, or a very large one. It is nice to know they are taking it seriously.

Hey, Todo10! I was able to reproduce the issue again in a post I made in a different thread just a few minutes ago. I was eventually able to add text to the last line in that post, but I did still have the problem of the last line of text disappearing at the bottom of the text box. It took a bunch of tries, but eventually I was able to get the cursor to "stick" at the end of the last line, and allow me to add to it. It took a lot of persistence, however, and is not optimal.

I can't tell for sure yet whether or not the software upgrade has made a difference. Things may have gotten just a bit easier, I'm not sure.

The web browser I use on this Samsung Player 5.0 is the default browser that came with the device. I don't even know how to find the name of this software or its version number. I guess I need to buy a book about the ins and outs of the Android operating system, but access to detailed info about the programs that come with the device may be limited. Ok, right now I'm going to draw another demarcation line, and then move my cursor back up to the top of what I've already written. Then I'll try to get my cursor back down to the bottom in order to add my name to the bottom of this post. Here goes:

Ok, the last part of my dashed line did disappear off the bottom of the text box again, and it took a couple of tries to get the cursor to go to the end of the dashed line, but I did manage it. So things may have gotten slightly better, I'm just not certain yet. I'll keep posting stuff and try to come back to this thread as the days go on.

Thanks so much for your efforts on this issue, Todo10! They are greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your post Tim. Do you know how to enter to Google Play and download Chrome browser for example?
I'm trying to find out if the issue is caused by the web browser you are using or by an application running on the background

I had time to play a little bit.

First a screenshot about the problem to ensure that we talk about the same:

"last line" no longer reachable

I test also with Chrome and Firefox and both don't show this issue.

For the Standard Browser there seems to be a quick workaround:
Go to "Settings" / "Accessibility" and change "Text scaling" to 90% (95% wasn't enough for me). After this change I could reach the last lines without problems.

Hope this helps to continue the investigation. If there is more to test just tell me.

Bernd

Forget this. It seems to work only if the text was written with 100% scaling before. For new text with 90% scaling the problem is back for me - damn.

Hey, Bernd! Thank you so much for your invaluable posts! It seems to me that you have quite possibly figured out the root of the problem!

I have not done much with Google Play, and I'm not entirely sure why that is, but the fact that you say the Chrome and Firefox browsers are free of this glitch will provide the motivation.

So thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you, also, Todo10! It may have been your suggestion about the browser that led Bernd to run his tests. Thanks for suggesting this as a possibility.

You are welcome Tim! But you make me sheepish . I only did the test requested by Todo10 (as you mentioned in your last post). Always glad if I can contribute a little.

Bernd

So this has been resolved? Sure? :)

I just made the test again with Chrome and it definitely doesn't show this problematic behavior. Sure I can only report what I see on my phone and therefore it would be nice if someone else could do a cross-check.

Claudio, what do you think about the proposal to create an "line 1" entry at "Support & Announcements"? Due to the fact that the problem looks related to the Android -Standard-Browser I guess there is no chance to provide a fix and therefore others will fall into the trap also.
