Today....

What's the tree with the pink flowers, Sean?
Mimosa.
A second one in the distance suffered some splits at badly structured forks. Some reduction pruning.

The big mimosa will probably end up cabled and braced. Deadwood, today... first visit at the property. Bunch of good tree care to do.
Japanese maples and forest bigleaf maples, coral bark maples and some ornamental, white-tinged deodara cedar, paperbark birches (jacquimonti? sp?).

We almost never have lightning but got a good little storm earlier this week where one of the trees just down the road from me actually got hit. Not even the tallest thing around, but stripped bark in a spiral top to bottom, cracked it to an unknown depth and blew bark across the road. Since it's not something I deal with often I'll be curious to watch this tree over the coming months and see how it responds.

Also made some progress on my 'mini-mobile-shop.' I'm maybe making it nicer than I'd originally intended... but whatever, it's mostly material I have sitting around and is nice to do. I'll get a bench vice and tool chest tomorrow on the mainland, then build the remaining shelves and work stations and have it done in about another week. Add in some oil stains, ropes on the wall and general clutter and it will start looking like a workshop instead of an office pretty soon!

I’m a libble lit jellz bellz of that shop trailer.

Libble lit: My 5 year old’s former way of saying “little bit”when he was 3.
Jellz Bellz: Jealous. Straight up.

Ha, well thanks for the compliment. It's about to get a lot better in the next few days (oh yah, also it will have an air compressor) and I'll try and refrain from posting more photos till it's actually done.

I've got some old Wesspur calendars to cut up and put the tree photos on the walls too :p

Might I recommend a small, vented doghouse outside of the room for the compressor? They can be annoyingly loud, especially in a smaller space like that.

It's a good idea and actually how I have my main shop set up, to get the compressor out of the workspace and block noise.

I may wind up doing that for this mini-shop as well at some point, but the way the compressor is mostly used is for blowing off gear and saws at the end of the day. That work is going to take place at a covered outdoor table, so I won't be inside with it when it is running. That way I'm not just blowing dirt and debris on the shop floor, plus not having to carry everything inside, then back outside.

I was having a conversation about sawmanship with Inbreed Jed a few years back and he said I was born with what he called an inner level. RIP homie..You are loved and missed..
I learned a lot from seeing Jed’s work. We had many discussions about “stump forensics”.
I enjoy your work as well Rico. You take pride in what you do and it shows.

I think he may have been on to something here. I see lots of sloppy cutting since we sub our crane to other tree services as well. Lots of folks struggle with getting that first cut level. If they mess it up, its usually downhill from there.

What kinda tree is that you're cabling, Oceans?

Did a very thorough reduction on this tree today, working for a friend. Love spending the day in a honey locust, pruning tips. Great tree was pretty clean when we started. srt delight. View attachment 89941
Locust is looking good!

Both trees in the post are Norway Maples. They are a particular challenge to reduce for a number of reasons. To name few…
- Timing: gotta prevent too much sap flow.
- Thin, leggy habit: difficult to reach extreme periphery/limited options to subordinate to (especially if another company gutted the tree out in the past!)

That's What Friends Are For

Got a call from a friend. Yeah! He lives on an island on Lake Vermillion in northern Minnesota. Has a dead Red Pine that he is worried will fall on his dock or boats. Wants me to come take it down.
This is going to be a two day adventure for me. First I am going to have to drive to the lake, about two hours away from here, unload my gear into his boat and motor to the island. Besides the tree I will have to do the friendship stuff as well and listen to him tell me about everything going on in his life. He is an architect and I have zero interest in anything he will be telling me. But that is what friends are for. Of course, I will have to spend the night on that damn island, then he will take me back to my truck and I will drive two hours back home. All for one little Red Pine.
