Time for a chipper upgrade, what's your preference?

I've outgrown my trusty old bandit 200+. Mostly feeding with mini skidsteer or mini excavator and the chipper has become the bottleneck. It's a terrible time to buy used but I don't think I can afford to wait another year.

Obviously bigger is better but I'd like to stick to towing with my f-550 as we have lots of tight driveways and loose/steep roads here in the mtn's. If I stay below the 8500lb mark I'll be in the sweet spot with the 17500 gvw of the truck giving me under 26k combined. That being said weight isn't the biggest factor, but I would like to keep it single axle for maneuverability.

Pre tier iv is a must, mechanical diesel would be a big plus to me. Winch is a must but can be added on most models, same with autofeed

More interested in the ability to crush tops and feed brush with less saw work than chipping big logs all day. I have a sawmill 15 min down the road and everyone burns firewood here. That being said, there's always junk wood that is better off chipped.

So far I'm looking at:

Bandit 1390/1490/1590.
+ I'm familiar with bandit and have had really good luck with them. Availability is pretty good. Easy enough to add winch if not optioned. Bigger drum than most (37").
-Used pricing is high. Too new for all mechanical diesels. the 18" (1590hd?) is pushing it weight wise

Morbark 15 (tornado?)
+welded infeed looks stout for feeding with machinery. Decent availability. Dealer is better than bandit locally. Pricing seems a little more realistic.
-Unfamiliar with morbark in general. Smaller drum (~20") with only two knives

Morbark 2400 (hurricane)
+ Welded infeed, bigger feed system and drum, 18" capacity, old enough to be available with mechanical motor, decent availablity and pricing
-Stuck to 4cyl due to weight (underpowered?), i've read pre 2001 had trouble throwing chips due to lack of blower

Vermeer BC1800
+readily available, big feed wheels (although vertical?), big drum, lot's out there with winch. pricing is better used than others, old enough to have mechanical motor
-flimsy vermeer bodywork, proprietary parts, underpowered (most older ones are 110hp that i've seen)

Carlton 2015
+ factory is a few hours away and has good support, most have winch, pricing is better than some of the big names
-maybe too new for pre emissions diesel, not very common used

Never seen a woodsman or conehead in person but I would like to know more about them.

Any other machines that fit my criteria that I'm missing?

I'm all ears, so any info or advice is greatly appreciated.

An older Bandit 1590, the 15” models, will work well for you and keep your weight where you want to be. You can also find them pre-emissions, we have one with about 8k hours on it that will probably be up for sale some time next year.

Meanwhile, I've got a 52 year old VW with nothing but surface rust, solid as the day it was made. Thanks PNW!

As far as chippers, that size is out of my area of knowledge so I'm not of any real help. In my experience used chippers in good condition are hard to come by, even more so with the supply chain problems of the last 2+ years. It will take some looking, but I'm sure there is something out there. Just beware of rot-box chippers with fresh coats of paint being sold online...

Yeah around here it’s paint eating lichen and moss.. I frequently have trees growing in the crevices of my vehicles.

I'll be selling my 1390xp with around 700 hrs on it after the new year. PM me if interested. 97hp diesel maintained with an open checkbook!

Upgraded to a 19xpc.

I really liked our 1090, that 1390 mentioned above was what replaced it. They are small enough to pull well with a lot of the features of a larger one. A great mid-range chipper!

The 1390XP is a great chipper, we ran one of those years ago as the first step up from the 990XP.

I am curious about the 19XPC, we have been looking at buying one next year to replace our tired 1590.

I can’t say enough good things about our 19XPC. It’s a beast. We used to run Morbark chippers, but once they went public their builds were lower quality and the service went downhill FAST! We bought a brand new 19XPC and absolutely LOVE it! One of the main features that pushed us to switch to this chipper from Morbark’s comparable chipper was that Morbark only offered a tandem axle instead of a single dual axle. We really wanted the shorter length. We’ve been extremely impressed with the quality of the build and especially the service that we have received. We turned right around and bought a brand new 12” from Bandit as well. Both machines are top notch.

Thank you. I’ve been a Bandit fan for a long time; we ended up with a new Morbark a few months ago and it’s not bad, but it’s definitely no Bandit. Which engine did you buy? That’s the big debate we have right now. We are probably going to go tandem axle, as they tow nicer and we don’t need something quite that compact to work in our area, and we will probably buy a ten wheeler to drag it around.

We went with the biggest Diesel engine option is what I recall. I’ll have to check tomorrow at the shop, can’t remember off hand.

I love our 2016 Tier 4 Bandit 1390. Haven’t had any issues with the emissions system yet. It continually impresses me what it will chip without hesitation. One guy I follow on Instagram has a 1990XP gas and he loves that thing. Seems really impressive what it will do from the videos he posts. He is always feeding it with an excavator, crane, or mini skid.

@treezach33 is his account on Instagram if you want to check it out.

We have the 5.7l gm gas in our 19xpc. It a great performing chipper and the feed system will blow you away. It's super impressive. I never thought I'd go gas but I have no regrets. The biggest plus in my book is the oversized feed wheel. I can shove a 18 log in without lifting the top yoke.

Are you guys having any issues with the gas motors?
I've got one in a pickup now and overall I like it. If i was buying new I would strongly consider one.

The only drawback is some chip drool in-between the truck and chipper. Otherwise you will like it. We mostly chip softwood up to capacity and it does great. Chipping larger diameter hardwood you may want to consider the diesel option. We like the simplicity of the gas engine.
