tight eye splice in "the fly" looking for pointers

Hi, first time splicer here, trying to put a tight eye splice in New England Fly.

Found these instructions

http://www.teufelberger.com/fileadm...ides/kernmantle/SPL_Kernmantle_Heavy_Duty.pdf

but having trouble doing the final bury - so tight! tried the 1/2 and 7/16 fid and also a guitar string........

If anyone has any pointers I would appreciate- it seems impossible to squeeze 2 cores inside the cover.

thanks.

Paul

PS it's very old rope- not a new hank

Maybe try to get more slack in the cover by milking it from the other end towards the splice.

After milking, massage the rope in the area of the bury.

KY jelly. No joke. Nick from Wisconsin suggested it to me before. Splicing used rope is usually an exercise in futility though. Might also try soaking in water.

Now I can't help but wonder what Nick's inspiration was... hmmm... someplace where he had KY jelly and rope together in close proximity... hmmm.....

I've had really good results in the fly splice with using a basket fid for the first few buries. I like to heat seal the ends of each of the 11 core strands.then for the final bury I use a wire fid or the small toss wand to pull 6 strands first then 5 strands after that. Lastly, I've found you can add a bunch of slack to the cover by carefully advancing all the core strands and closing up the eye part of the splice... hope this makes sense and helps.
