Thinking of getting a new 18" chipper, opinion pls

Well, I'm not sure about that. It is all relative. Check out the "used" and "Sold" page/prices at the Carlton website if you care to know more. I was surprised to see how much used chippers of both brands are going for.

Plus, not sure about you/everyone, but I'm not really thinking about reselling when I buy a new chipper. Sure, comes a time to upgrade and all, but then again, a good spare chipper, paid off, can be priceless.

To each their own.

Just saying, around here if you want to unload a used chipper, it better be a Vermeer or a Bandit. Mostly because they're the only dealers in the area.

In my experience, bandits hate anything dead. It stalls the lower feeder religiously. After driving thousands of yards of dead ash through all different models of morbark, most recently an m18r, with significantly less feeder issues, I would strongly advise examining your market and figure out the %of dead material you process and go from there.
Morbark boo! No red in my yard

Cuz he can buy 3 12" bandits for the price of 2 12" morbarks and the same yellow machines shoot further and have bigger motors. 'bout cover it Mike?

In our area a few guys run bigger Morbark i have never had a need for anything bigger than my 255 bandit . I have tried most but have got best bang per buck with bandit. I did get 4 Carlton 1712 in feb and they seem good on our lighter trucks ,Vermeer machine was inrelable but sales guy was great just machine broke twice during demo

Welltree, good to hear. Glad to hear a little positive support for Carlton chippers, sort of like the sound of crickets when I bring it up sometimes. It may be a regional thing, but there are quite a few around here, and I think most people who own them like them.

Never been a huge user of "dealer support" since if you buy new, you don't really need it that much. But I do understand why you would want something kinda close, dealer-wise, just in case.

No, I own a Carlton, a Ditch Witch, and a coupla Fords. What I mean is that I don't find dealer support to be that crucial to a great product, since great products usually don't break down all that much.

I guess I don't have much bad to say (or good) for Vermeer, but there is a dealer in my town. I still went with other brands, not too impressed by the two Vermeer demos I've been party to.

I may be confused by your comment, Classictruck; maybe the "if not" part is throwing me off. I think you're putting Vermeer down, but it's unclear to me. Sorry to be daft.

I
Very handy yes, had a few Vermeer problems though, had a few problems with electric throttles and a wrong hydraulic pump, but we're working the bugs out, when its working its a beautiful, elegant machine
I wondered about mounting a Vermeer on rear to power the whole unit I've never had much reliability out of one

I'd like to see a photo of that set up.

I thought it was small from the start, but even on heavy removal days we've never filled it, however large removals are usually done with our 40 ton boom truck and 20" morbark.

The reason we used a Vermeer bc1000 is because we had 2 paid for and didnt need to buy another 12".
