Think I\'m gonna retire

Had just about enough of trees. Need some career guidance. So far with my transferable skills I could work at McDonalds or, be a walmart greeter. Anyone else have any ideas? Did anyone else want out and get out successfully? Thoughts?

Re: Think I\'m gonna retire

Go run a crane for tree co. At least you'll know the mechanics of it.

I've wondered myself what life holds for me in he future. Some days are just "those" days.

Re: Think I\'m gonna retire

What do you want to do? I was wondering about scaffolding. Absailing or whatever it's called, high angle construction/maintenance I'd bet is begging for skilled workers.

Re: Think I\'m gonna retire

"Those" days turned into everyday somewhere along the line. Once upon a time I loved tree work, then it turned into just a job. Now I'd rather be happy and poor, than well off and have to see a chainsaw ever again.

Re: Think I\'m gonna retire

the good thing about this job is there really is a good chance the grass is actually greener. the bad thing, we are all in this job because of who we are.
No other industry would allow us to be as creative as we are allowed to be. Imagine how much time you would need with any other company before you could tell your boss, "here is what Im gonna do," and then describe basically any day, and have your boss say… "cool sounds like a plan". I mean walmart may get nervous if you try and push to many carts in at one time. and that will get frustrating.

Re: Think I\'m gonna retire

Maybe you need a few months to realize how awesome tree work is once working at another job? I know I feel burnout especially after pushing it hard day in and day out. It's good to step away and come back fresh, maybe you need an extended break. Just don't sell your gear!

Also, there's a lot of niche's in this industry. Maybe it's time to find a different niche instead of doing the same ol' same ol', who knows??

Really though, I'd like to make and sell live edge furniture. Can't seem to crack that market.

Re: Think I\'m gonna retire

live edge furniture?

"Now I'd rather be happy and poor, than well off and have to see a chainsaw ever again."

One option is downsizing (if you are your own show) and find a niche like t&s said. Selling preservation is fun. I use a chainsaw maybe 1 hr out of 20-30 hours/week, and that's mostly firewood for the house.

Hey! I have buddies in Kinmount. I'll never be able to look them in the eye again.
Then again the boys from Oro used to thrash us soundly. They are even more manly down that way.

Funny that RopeShield, my Dad's the guy on the exercise machine at 1:10. When he retired he did extra work and "real people" modeling for ads.

Big Wood, there are plenty of ways to go with your experience. First though you need to put it on paper in order to glean what that experience demonstrates in the way of skills, abilities, aptitudes, and knowledge.

Within the industry there is training, consulting, sales, etc... Outside of it are plenty of ways to use your talents.

As for live edge why not go down to the Distillery District and talk to some of the furniture manufacturers who showcase there. When I lived in T.O. I met some cool dudes selling some very high end furniture. The one guy told me he loved to work with material that had a story. It made the piece much easier to sell.
