Things to look for in an under CDL bucket truck (forestry package)

Hello, I am going to look at a used bucket truck this weekend, a 1995 international with a altec LRV 50 boom. Anyone have any thoughts on this particular truck or boom? I know it's a little older than some of you would look at, but buying new isn't a possibility for me at this time.

Thanks in advance for the input,
Justin

Make sure it has a current dialectic verification by Altec . If it doesn’t don’t waste your time . Shit gets pricey fast

For what its worth, I steer clear of power lines anyways with the exception of a feeder to a house. But I will definitely be asking about boom inspections and certifications

They are built solid. I would beware of the juice brakes though.

Are they prone to leaks on this truck, or bigger issues? I have a gmc 7000 with hydraulic brakes, its has needed the brakes replaced but no serious problems with the brake system.

With regards to the brakes, i just don’t trust a larger truck with juice brakes. If a line goes then the truck is going to have a hard time stopping.

The altec boom is good. If you get the truck PM me and I’ll give you the altec road service managers cell. He told me to call him directly to schedule if there an issue on a jobsite.

Thatd be great. Thanks.

My experience so far with buckets is a hi-ranger with a pistol grip. Are there any large differences between the two brands of lifts, or is it similar to saws where some people just prefer husky or stihl as a personal preference?

Edit: I have changed the title to this thread, the truck in question was sold to someone else yesterday.

I'll still be looking into another truck, so I'm just brainstorming on things to look for. Also brands of lift? I'm thinking its between hi-ranger and altec, are there any other reputable lifts to look at?

I have a 2006 altec GM (former asplundh truck) with 65k miles for sale. No issues. Truck is in excellent condition. Brand new tires. $45k

Just a personal preference, but I'd rather avoid an asplundh truck.

Maybe I'm mistaken, and you may not have the answer to this, but I was under the understanding that asplundh ran their trucks up until they got close to needing major repairs; Then sold them off to buy new, if that's true the mileage seems a bit low.

Not questioning your mileage, just questioning what I've heard about asplundh. Or was there another reason why they sold it?

Good question. Never heard that about them. I’ve had quite a few of their trucks over the years. I almost bought one a few years ago (didn’t have the money at the time) from a gentleman in Florida who sold nothing but their trucks. They drove them to him from all over the country to drop off for resale. He would paint them and blah blah blah. Seems like they couldn’t drive them there broken. The truck I have I took in trade from a good friend of mine who has and runs 25 plus bucket trucks in nothing but storm work. I had to beg him to get that truck in the trade. One of my crews is using the truck today. I certainly wouldn’t send a truck out that’s on its last leg, that I’m wanting to sell.

I think any truck from any company at any time could be in bad condition. Gotta know what your looking at is all.

I mean, that is what they *should* do, right? Everyone should do that. You're rolling dice that it will be free of major repairs until you can upgrade. If it needs major repairs, you need to have $ set aside for that. I had that issue with my used skid steer purchase. Currently have it with my high mileage E350. Just need to realize what your MO is and be ready to deal with worst case.
