The title's a little decieving

Re: The title\'s a little decieving

Will the deer continue to eat the trees after they've stripped the buds? How much woody material do they eat?

It would seem like doing this to entice deer in for the kill would mean doing the felling just before the season. Kind of like baiting or dumping a bucket of apples in the shooting lane.

Re: The title\'s a little decieving

Depends how hungry they are. The fresh branches are like chocolate cake to them. They love conifer branches even, they're liking the lichen. They almost come into the drop zone to get at them in the middle of summer.

Had to dump a couple loads of poplar branches in late summer on a friend's farm. I felt I was kind of abusing the friendship but the deer ate the whole thing right up during the winter.

The outfitters would use it for marketing. Some are running 40 hunters through a week. If they're any good they're fully booked and they only take a couple of the biggest trophy males out of the area. So they love to feel like conservationists, giving the deer their natural winter browse is way better than the tree huggers and dept. of natural resources survival food piles of grain and bales. But those deer do taste better....mmm.

It would be impractical to use branches for hunting bait more for winter survival food caches.

Just thought of another win. Baiting isn't legal everywhere. Would the deer narcs think your branch pile is bait? Doubt it and if they did too bad.

The biggest problem with this technique is if you look at the forest and the stage it is in. He even said it, no low browse. Means the deer have chewed it all off. Now he just went out and cut a dozen, two dozen or more trees to over winter the deer. Where is the next generation of Red maple going to come from? Give it 5 or 6 years and he will be able to plant a food plot cause all he will have is fields. And the deer still wont stay around in the winter. Concervation

? Not really, more like short term gain for long term loss. I mean those deer stripped that tree in 5 days, now he has to cut another to keep them interested.

Just plant apple trees and let the apples lie, thats great winter food. Hey white oaks are good too.

Re: The title\'s a little decieving

You missed the biggest win, debris disposal. Dillution is the solution to pollution.

$150/load if you need help loading it.. Organic, natural, juicy, winter deer forage.

There would be some wood left everytime. Often the whole pile would be untouched. But if it's spread thin so the deer can get at it by the time the next year's load would be brought you'd drive over the old wood crushing it and covering it with the fresh buffet.

Re: The title\'s a little decieving

I cut trees on water company property for another contractor for firewood logs during the winter when there is a lot of snow for residential tree work. The deer absolutely love it. Today I went back in an area where I worked Friday, I had deer surrounding me all day long. Deer poo everywhere, evidence of them bedding down. It's mostly Birch, it's gotta be tasty!
