We are a pretty decent size company ($15k plus a day) and I deal with this problem occasionally. IT ALL COMES DOWN TO EXPERIENCE IN THE FEILD!!!!!!
It’s no wonder I’m the best estimator I have;)
I’m a 14 year climber and I started this company from day one with nothing. Im followed very closely by my business manager who dragged brush and roped for me when it was just me and him. I have and have had other estimators who miss the mark from time to time. Nobody bats a thousand, but when it happens regularly here’s what I do;

1.)Immediately postpone the underbid job.
2.)clear the estimators schedule for a day
3.)reclassify my estimator under “tree work” workman’s comp for that day
4.)reschedule the job with the estimator present as a groundie
5.)let him feel the pain.

It works. I swear it works so good we have to have a talk with them a couple weeks later because they are busting peoples heads with the work orders they are writing.
I deal with this problem A LOT. Mantras help you get through the job, but it hurts when you regularly are getting bigger (harder) jobs than estimated in a packed full schedule.
We have an experienced sales guy, and he sometimes works the job with the smaller crew. Proceeds to change the work order (or its vague AF) to suit himself and so now gets to cut everything or climb.
But today was the classic version of the sales hospital pass. Our "decent sized cherry" removal was a 3ft diameter, 5 stem codominant, cracked open but held up by another tree starfish monster. 80% required rigging, the only access was a parking spot for the bucket next to the stump and a mini path around the house through the back yard. The only drop zone was 5ft around the base or through the understory into a creek.
15 man hours? Yea, maybe if the non-existent crane was parked in the living room.
My tolerence for bogus work orders is my strongest attribute as a worker and I have one guy to thank!:boxeador:

That sounds pretty crappy. We had to bring the crane out today on “emergency “ status. Noticed a leaning/uprooting pine on the property line halfway through. Had to cancel the next job but made three times as much $. I have had some days like that though for sure!

Thanks for helping me calm down! Today was something else. I don't want to talk about.

What do they use a score method to price a job? If a tree is 24 inches it costs this much kinda thing? Cuz we all know a 24” Pine is way different than a 24” monkey puzzle tree!

I use the hourly method. How long is it going to take me to do X, how many personnel and what other resources do I need. 2 guys with chipper and skid steer is the same as 2 guy no clean up per day (I still pay the payments). Many times a half or quarter day job will be slightly higher due to the extra effort needed to get other work lined up locally. It’s certainly not perfect but it works out for me with a hiccup every once in a while but I’m on site so if I screw up I suffer too.

I am at a fork in the road because of the disregard for my crew and myself. I am sick of getting thrown under busses without a way out. We were out late with no cell service, and no one came to the job to see what was up. I guess if there is no effort to fix what is broken I will have to walk. I refuse to make my days with my labor of love days I wished I stayed in bed. Hope you guys have a great 4th. Thanks so much for talking. Y'all just don't know how much you have helped me out. I hope I can be here for you guys when you need an open ear connected to an open mind.

I look at a fork in the road as an opportunity. You can decide to travel down a new path, more traveled or less traveled. Or you can continue in the direction you are currently going and try to make positive change going forward. The fork isn’t really the important part of life, it’s the decision and the commitment to follow that decision out to see where it takes you. Dont stand at the fork waiting for someone to lead you down the road, weigh the options and go. Remember just because there is a fork right in front of you, it doesn’t mean if you take the “wrong” path, there won’t be another fork farther on. They always seem to be there when you need one! Enjoy your day off, and go back with a clear mind to decide your path!
