Teufelberger's new Platinum rope.

Re: Teufelberger\'s new Platinum rope.

Nice find Taylor!

Thanks for posting it.

Hard to argue with their engineering logic.

Re: Teufelberger\'s new Platinum rope.

Platinum was debuted in the States at ITCC Portland. It will also be on hand at the TCI Expo in Baltimore. Stop by the New England Ropes booth and check it out!

Re: Teufelberger\'s new Platinum rope.

Both Beddes and Taylor had a hank in Portland, OR at the ITCC. I know Beddes used his as an access line, don't know about Taylor.
I like the concept. I didn't get a chance to ascend on it. But, I did get to feel it.

Re: Teufelberger\'s new Platinum rope.

10.6mm elongation <5.

Seems like an ascent only line. Not big enough for srt work positioning. I don't know what the elongation is from that number unless I misread it.

Re: Teufelberger\'s new Platinum rope.

It drives me crazy the way that teufelburger will not release actual data on the elongation of their ropes.

Sterling gives exact % elongation at 3 different weights for each diameter of HTP. I was given the run around for weeks from teufelburger/new england ropes when I tried to get this sort of info about globe 5000, until I finally gave up.

I can't take a rope company seriously that doesn't respect it's customers enough to tell us what we're buying.

I read that as an elongation factor of less than 5 percent.

Re: Teufelberger\'s new Platinum rope.

So one of these ropes knotted is rated at 18 Kn, or 4046 lbs.

Yeah but that's preposterously vague. That's like telling me the MBS is between 500 lbs and infinity. 5% stretch will feel like a rubber band; that's almost as much as dynamic rock ropes.

Below is the from the Sterling website, for 10mm HTP. Their catalogue has even more detailed specs but I can't find that right now.

A CE0120 certified product Yes
A NFPA1983,2006 certified product Yes
Elongation at 10% MBS 1.70%
Elongation at 300 lbs 1.00%
MBS lbs (kN) 5,980 (26.6)
Safe Working Load 598 lbs
Weight (lbs/100') 5.3

Re: Teufelberger\'s new Platinum rope.

It's understandable that a lifeline would have a 5 percent elongation factor.

At least to me anyway.

Re: Teufelberger\'s new Platinum rope.

I have been running this line for about 120 hours in the tree. What I can tell you is this, remember this is my own opinion:

Supple, good knotability (somewhere between HTP and Kernmaster)
10.5mm
NO milking
Runs smooth in a Uni/RIG/RW/HH
Sheath is a 24ct., many are 32ct., so it does have a slight rougher feel, which holds hitches betten than a smooth super static line
Not too heavy and not too light (will go through a foot ascender well and be easily fed throught the canopy)
I LOVE IT!!

I should have my hank at EXPO. By that time it should have at least 250 hrs on it.

Ummm, I don't think you are understanding this. They didn't say it has 5% elongation, they said it has somewhere between 0% and 5% elongation, which is a huge range. They also didn't specify at what load this elongation takes place. Ropes elongate more when you put more load on them, so you need to specify what load produces what elongation or the number is meaningless.

This is (I think) the most critical statistic that tells you how a rope will behave when you climb it, and it really bugs me that teufelburger won't tell.

Re: Teufelberger\'s new Platinum rope.

I agree it's a bit vague. But I assumed that max elongation would occur just prior to MBS.

Re: Teufelberger\'s new Platinum rope.

I have this goofy backpack climbing prototype I'm building, and this rope is exactly what I've been looking for to incorporate into it. At just over 5 lbs per 100 feet, it's poifect!

Thanks for the lead again Taylor.

That might be what they meant, but it doesn't tell you anything about how it will perform when you put the weight of a climber on it.
