Tenex full bury??

Location

Just picked up 100' of 3/8 tenex to make odds and ins out of and have a question. When using the locking brummel, will a 4 inch bury be safe and acceptable instead of doing a cross over in the middle? keep in mind I'm not worried about a beefer feel or it squareing off. Nick, Rich???

I should also mention that i won't hesitate to sell a locked brummell with a shorter tail. I think that there should be a rule...a standard for using it. Right now everyone is guessing.

With a bit of break testing it could be done, I bet.

Someone send me the rope and we can test it!

Nick its basically the a footlocking lanyard modeled after a guy I work with. You made one similar for Tyler (PUclimber). I'm going test it at our wood products lab next week see what happens.

Joe, make sure to stitch it up and have a gradual taper on the bury. If you have a locking brummel, a cross over in the middle is not required, but stitching is.
Why not just do a straight bury, no tucks, I have been climbing on spliced eye & eye's this way for 2 years. (see attachment)

hey norm,
that would make me nervous... how long is the bury on those? i know ya stitched 'em but still?

on the other hand, i showed one of my tress cords (which had 2 locked brummels in it) to brion toss and he smiled and said "mmm.. twice the work and half as strong..".

It's a full bury with a crossover in the middle. This is the way to splice Class 2 fibers. Samson Rope is now using this method for all splices, Class 1 & 2 fibers.
Like I said, I have been using this splice for over 2 years without any problems.

.. does class 2 = high modulus?
thanks,
k.

You got it.

Modulus just means "a fibers ability to resist stretch." We could say that nylon is low-mod. The high-modulus fibers (Technora, Dyneema/Spectra, Kevlar, PBO/Zylon, Vectran, etc) tend to be very strong for their size/weight...and also very NOT stretchy.

The crossover if I am correct is when you take the tails of your line after making your eyes and bury them all the way through and taper the ends and overlap them in the middle of your split tail to make it one nice continuous feel.

Fred, it's like in the 16 strand splice (which I KNOW you've done before)...where the cover tail and the core taper into eachother.

But now we are talking about the buried tails from each eye on either side of the eye-eye sling. In the same way we tapered the cover tail and the core in the 16 strand splice, now you taper the two tails into eachother so that you end up with, as PUClimber put it, a continuous feel.
