Taking photos up in the tree

Idk man.. you don't want to take your electronic into the tree but you want to take pictures while up there.. i think most are going to tell you that doing so is pretty self explainitory. Take it out & take the picture or have a go pro attached to their helmets. If your really that scared if dropping it.... maybe use a leash.. you know the same way ppl keep themselves from dropping it when on the ground.?

Personally I don't want any distractions like electronics when I'm climbing so pictures are usually the last thing in my mind.. but that's just me.. maybe once i master this trade I'll consider worrying about dropping my electronics.. but that's just me. Those who are good enough to trust themselves doing both, all the power to ya.

How do you guys take photos while you are in a tree? I am too scared of dropping a camera or phone, so I dont take photos. I would like to though, do you have any tipps for me?

Get a GoPro

Get a case for your phone. Bonus points if it has a strap to attach a leash

A little camera like an RX100 would be small and mighty in a canopy

Find a friend who’s willing to climb and make him take pictures

I've thought about this too, more so videos then pictures. Do you follow any YouTube tree guys? Some of the footage they get is pretty badass between in tree footage, ground footage, and then drone footage. Combine it all together and you got a pretty cool video. Maybe watch some videos and you can get an idea of what equipment they are using.

Two people who pop right into my head are August Hunicke and Trevor Ahern.

They're making videos but I am sure you can employ similar techniques for taking pictures.

GoPro mounts are very secure and is easy to take pictures and videos with them. Otherwise look on craigslist/Facebook/eBay for an old cheap phone with a camera. If it gets dropped, no big deal.

Winter time my phone stays in a zippered jacket pocket, Summers a padded chalk bag for rock climbing with a drawstring closure works well

Seems like the risk of dropping something in a tree is not as high as I thought... I mean, I dont drop my phone on the ground, I will probably not drop it in a tree. I might actually buy a gopro, one of those has been on my wishlist for a long time...

You can still take great pics and video with a 10 mp camera, and these can be found cheap. Get something that was top of the line 10 years ago and you won't be so mad if it breaks.

Just use a selfie-stick for your cam, or phone and tether it onto you. Helmet mounts work too. I've taken a DSLR into a Redwood, but the extra weight is excessive. I've had success with a android cellphone cam, a go-pro clone action cam and my favorite, a Madventure 360 cam.treexp (2).webp

Wear a tradeshow lanyard around your neck and keep your phone in there. Many drops happen while pocket fumbling. I keep my iphone on me while climbing; I don't leave the ground without it!IMG_6597.webp

I did a Bing search for the Amazon Germany website, translated into english, and then I did a search on Amazon for "sport cameras". Here is a link to a page of those search results.

https://www.amazon.de/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?__mk_de_DE=ÅMÅŽÕÑ&url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=sport+cameras&rh=i:aps,k:sport+cameras

On the USA Amazon website I found a complete sport camera kit that is a copy of the GoPro system for around $40.00 US, and it contains all of the attachments plus a remote control that sits on your wrist like a watch. I think the remote would be helpful if you've got your camera mounted on your helmet, as the camera can be tough to work on when it's already mounted there. You'll need to read through the descriptions to find one that provides all of that stuff. The one I bought also came with it's own zippered case to hold the whole kit when not in use. An amazing buy.

Edit: @Jan_: Among the search results I showed you in the link above was this one for a unit that has the remote control I'm talking about, and so far 25 people have given the camera a perfect score of 5 out of 5 stars, I think. I can't read the reviews, myself, as they are written in German. Here's the link to the particular unit I'm talking about.

Thanks for doing all that research, I bought myself another gopro ripoff on friday though. I ended up going for a slightly more expensive one, its called "Rollei 430" . I havent taken it up into a tree since its been raining like crazy, but when I do I will post some pictures here(y)

@Bob Bob You are the AerialTraveler? I was the guy who commented about the stuck throwbag in your beech video, I actually wondered if you were on TreeBuzz... I really like the quality of your videos, I tested my new camera on my MTB, and with the chest mount video is very shaky. It looks great when I set it down on the ground though.
