Tachyon- THE SPLICE

So I did my first Tachyon splice today. It's a neat rope with a firm feel. Because this rope is double braid with an additional inner core that just adds firmness to the rope, the splice is a modified double braid splice.

The directions I used are not on NE Ropes website yet, but I've posted them at my little site. You can click on http://www.splicesbynick.com/splicingdirections and go to the Tachyon pdf.

I followed these directions to the T and the splice went together very easily, up to the last step, when you have to run the splice home. At this point it took a lot of massaging and I used another person to pull on the fid while I was milking the core up. It took a lot of work, but I got it done and it looks alright for a first try.

I have to say, this rope splices way better than the fly!

Have you spliced it yet? How'd you do it?

love
nick

You sure do pretty work Sensei. Thank you again for all the help you given me over the last several months.

I'm really liking this rope too but oddly enough after buying and using almost 300', I haven't climbed on it yet.

I've done ten tight eye splices in Tachyon now. The first three using Toss' instructions and all went well. I did two following the NE instructions on the website. They're well hidden but available here as <u>"Double Braid with Core Eye Splice Instructions"</u>. I had to re-write them by hand since my kids used my computer when I was splicing... Thanks for the PDF it's MUCH nicer. Anyway, I couldn't get the splice to run home and had to cut them. After some analysis and a little experimentation I learned that the distance measured from the original core exit point (mark one to mark two) was shorter in the NE instructions than the Toss instructions. I increased it by an inch and did seven more good ones with the usual struggle at the end.

The orange I've spliced was a little easier to finish than the green but both took a fair amount of work to get the eye tightened all the way down. I don't bang on it but I use a four foot lever to pull the last couple of inches home.

In case you're wondering why I had to do that many... I did four making a couple of lanyards, two just as a test and four more for a couple of really sweet rope swings. I was pretty sick of splicing Tachyon last week.

sweet looking splice Blinky, just wondering, you stitched the splice at the end of the burry which makes sense to me but Ive seen many stitch it close to the eye. Any thoughts????

pctree, I stitched it there because I couldn't get a needle through it in the usual place... it's so packed that getting a strong needle into is more trouble than it's worth. It is stitched with the marker yarn (Toss instructions) up very close to the eye, kind of in the wide part where it's not brick hard.

Thanks John, I hope I'll be ordering some for myself sometimes soon. Rope swing pics next week.

Hey nick, the top link "Yale Cordage's Splicing PDFs" on your page doesn't have a link addressed attached. Don't know if thats intentional or if it was missed. Like i said just so you know

Very cool site, very helpful. I hope to learn more about splicing soon so i can understand all this stuff. Then i can ask some obvious questions.

Nice looking splices. Keep up the good work.

How does this rope compare to Poison Ivy or Fly?

Hopefully more like the Poison Ivy.

I think it feels more like the Fly, except firmer with less stretch.

I've never used Fly but I'm a die-hard PI user. When I first picked up Tachyon at TCIA it felt like PI but tighter... same outer texture as PI, maybe not quite as supple but only slightly so. It doesn't stretch much.
