Check out this canker on a sycamore limb.
I've had this section of a sycamore limb for 15 years. I once took it to a Penn/Del meeting and almost had to wrestle Dr. Shigo to retain possession! I love that guy.
It's hanging in the rafters out in the shop. Dr. Shigo told me that the rings are annual growth rings laid down in the spring and as the weather got warmer the bacteria died that was causing the damage.....and the cycle was repeated the following year...or at least until I came along.
