Sunny February Day

Yes! What's the difference between the Hero 3 and Hero 4... other than price?

(that is, differences that matter for using it in a tree)

Nice work Steve. As already said...if you just pushed a little harder the log would not have come on your side of the stem and all would have been copacetic. But the fact that it DID is not a small mistake imo.

A misjudgment is always something to file away and the obvious fix would have been to be on the other side of the stem to make the cut. Seems to me that was NONE of the gm's fault. Anyhow...live and learn and consider any learning experience without injury (pain will reinforce it) to be an asset.

Just tell the gm that when a piece comes back at you and ties up in you.....do NOT lower anymore. I saw you checking your line for friction damage. I once saw a Mexican back in early 70's at a big co. I worked for lower a piece that the line draped over the climber's wrist laying on the branch stub, and it nearly removed his hand from the sawing effect. Language difference complication. "quit lowering dickhead"..."no comprende".

Thanks for posting the video.

My 2 cents. 1st off very minor mistake Steve. I would have butt tied the piece so the rope was closer to the stem so when the piece came off the lowering line would have went to the other side of the stem immediately and I would have put a notch to help direct the cut. But more important I would have cut from the other side. positioning is everything. Glad the wood didn't hit you.

I think notching fatties in the tree is usually just asking for a bar stuck in the cut (which can lead to disaster) and unnecessary most of the time.

The GP 4 has an LCD screen on the back for view, playback and settings etc. The 3 does not I believe.
The 4 black has a screen and the 4 silver does not. The 4's are a newer generation of GP's than the 3. Will shoot 1080p and 4K...

So I've been taking in what you guys are saying about the positioning. I watched again and think I didn't move to the other side of the tree because my line would have been in contact with the rigging line. I don't remember exactly but point well taken. Thank you.

Very nice video Steve. I watched the first upload, and the subsequent "mistake" you made.

Schnitzel happens. That was a small piece to learn on!

I liked the first video quite a bit actually. Apart from all the intense / quick edits / giant removals / 300' cranes / etc, etc, it's refreshing to see a nice take-down, well executed, clean, organized, controlled.

Nice !

...and with a significant mistake in it
