I was on a garden club property just north of Wilmington DE today looking at her trees. Found this one that stumped me. She had a list of everything she has bought and planted over the last 15 years, where she got it and how much it cost (dedication to her garden), but no acer. But she said it was an acer.

Thanks for any ideas you may have

Wow! thats a cool one! Looks like it was grafted onto an A. grisium root stock. I think if you could hit the books a little bit using the dark colored buds, tri-foliate leaves, and very fuzzy twigs and petiole as your guiding stars you could come up with a good result.

I would try searching for A. Maximowiczianum first, I think that could be a good jumping off point to getting that tree ID'd.

Check out this great article about trifoliat maples and cutleaf maples from the Arnold Arboretum: http://arnoldia.arboretum.harvard.edu/pdf/articles/1997-57-2-amazing-grace-the-cutleaf-maples.pdf

That acer M. Looks like a dead ringer. Only confirmation I couldn’t find was pubescent fruit but everything else lines up.

Thank for the Arnold article
