Some research folks from the west coast shared similar comments about some older redwoods out this way. And it sounds like similar growth spurts can be detected in other centuries: the history of the tree stored in the wood. From what I recall, growth of recent decades may be comparable to a period two or three centuries ago.
Every hike in the redwoods, I enjoy stopping by the fallen trees that were cut to clear the trail, to check out the rings. The one below was interesting. And the spurts may be more related to light and falling of other trees than climate. But the ring size was remarkably big in the outer few years prior to getting knocked over in a storm a couple of years ago.
