Strange tree root situation and other big trees

okay, i was on a walk with my wife this afternoon around the local university campus and i spotted this strange hole dug out all around this fir tree. the first picture is just to give perspective and the next two show the actual hole. i have never seen this done before, does anyone have an explanation or ideas why the hole was dug?

now, here's just a couple of some trees of interest around the campus. this one's a pretty good size sequoia for being round these parts

Re: Strange tree root situation and other big tree

What happened to your disguise in the last couple of shots? /forum/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

That Fir looks like someone used an air spade to see why it might not look as good as the others. Any root clippings done that you noticed?

Re: Strange tree root situation and other big tree

That spreading tree with the bench under it is beautiful...good shot. I'm no help on the root situation but I really do like those trees.

Re: Strange tree root situation and other big tree

It looks like they may have heavily mulched around the trees and cleared the basal area to let it breath. Flawed logic methinks if that is the case.

Hey sizzler, where's your old goofy id photo. The new one of the dog is cool too !
Looks like someone has done a exploratory root collar excavation ( probably with air spade ) to look for any signs of decay / problems / grade fills etc.
Looks like the weather is good in Siberia !? /forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Strange tree root situation and other big tree

mark, thats no disguise. between pictures i shaved and fixed my astigmatism. your probly right about the air spaid, the roots were very clean, but there were no cuts or clippings at all.

panthro, thanks, im glad you were able to see the tree. its actually been cabled

lumberjack, ive never heard of root breathing. that could explain why they didnt backfill it right away

gareth, i agree that the old photo of my rugged visage was more pleasing to look at. somehow, that small dog picture just doesnt do it justice. heres a better picture . . . oh, and we've been having a warm winter here in siberia, all the permafrost just melted away!

The same things as why volcano mulching is a bad idea is what I was thinking.

About Siberia, 100 people (last I heard) have died from the cold in Moscow, and hundereds are hospitalized due to the sever cold. Random thought, I dectected sarcasim with the permafrost melting, as its permenant.

It doesn't look like the tree was too deep from the pictures, the moss seems to run down to the flare. Maybe they are getting ready to do macro injection. It looks to be a Pseudostuga menzesii (doug fir). I don't know of any macro treatments for that tree but I have seen Platanus treated that way, larg amounts of whaterver is "injected" into the root buttrus roots. Is that OSU? Very cool to see that flare though, let us know what happens!!

Re: Strange tree root situation and other big tree

Re: Strange tree root situation and other big tree
