Square rigging with a view

Did you consider a vertical speedline?

If there is a decent LZ, which it looked like, it seems like it would have been faster to set rigging . The best part that I found with vsl is that there is no slam dunk/whipping of the climber.

How tall was the spar when you started blocking down? The cam discovers the view.

I wouldn't have trusted a vsl there Tom, the wood would be landing on wood, plus the size/height of it I would worry that the rope could get cut. It was about 130' tall so the first cut in the video is probably around 95'.

Gord,

Why the "need" to wet the rope for friction/heat?

where you using a tight lowering device, like a porta wrap or something?

I'm not familar with smaller LDs.

Do they get the rope hot?

It was a porty we were using. One of the larger pieces that ran fast singed the rope a little. The water definitely keeps the device cooler. Heck usually our ropes are wet anyways...

Man If I use an AFS, a tag line to pull the pieces over, block, sling, 9/16" stable braid and a bigger saw? It still takes me 7 minutes to prepare for a back cut after all is in place and I have the 'all clear' from the ground. Is this an ok time? I'm not pressing myself for it but just wondering if that's about an average prep time for, let's say, 6'-8' sausages?

I think 7 minutes is pretty good, I know I've taken longer than that. But it also depends on how fat the spar is. I've found that as the size goes up, it takes longer to setup all your rigging and make the cuts to get it ready for the ground guys.

... Or it could just be that your further down on the spar so you can loose steam faster
