Splitting Bark on Oak Tree

Hello,

I have a large (~50') oak tree with the bark splitting in the front and the back of the tree. The tree has been like this since I moved in two years ago. The splits seem to have gotten a little wider since last year, but the tree is still completely green at the top (no dead branches). The wood underneath the split bark looks rough, almost like it’s turning into new bark, but I’m not sure. I’m wondering what could have caused this, and if there is something I should do, or should I leave it alone? Will the bark eventually grow back? Thank you very much for any information.

-Ian

Ian, I think you'd be best served by hiring an ISA Certified Arborist with a strong plant health care background to do a site visit/consultation. While it looks as though you've got new bark beneath the fissures, I think it's a good idea to have a professional take a close look anytime I see lateral fractures like that.
