Splicing Two Pieces of Ultrex Together?

We have two pieces of Ultrex sitting around the shop, both under 100 feet long, and I’m wondering if it is possible to splice them together where they will run on a chipper winch effectively as one rope. Anybody ever do such a splice?

Both ropes are used and a little bit fuzzy, but still in good shape. Not sure if it is worth the effort or not, trying to save some money where possible because this stuff is expensive!
 
It’s a super simple splice. Figure out if you want to do a locking Brummel.
Pro is added security
Con is much reduced breaking strength (20%?ish)

I’d see if Yale has instructions, or just use amsteel instructions.

The min bury and taper is what you need. I buried mine a bit longer (one extra fid) and make a much longer taper.
You basically thin out the tail and shove one rope into the other, then the remaining end shove it in to the other leg of line.
Really super simple easy splice
Lock stitching is essential with dynema and more so with an end to end slice on a winch line.
Line diameter will certainly be fatter and stiffer for about 6’

They are using a non locking brumel. Personally I’d go straight bury or locking brumel

Thank you for that, I shall watch the video later and see if it looks doable with used rope and no fids. I don’t mind the rope a little thicker and stiffer for a distance as long as it still winds around the winch drum with no issue.

Also, looking at what I have, one piece is 5/16”, the other is 3/8”. That should still work, correct?

Eh I personally wouldn’t risk that. The diameter is critical for the “Chinese finger trap” of the splice to function. You might get away with it, but would almost need some sort of much longer bury.. I can’t see risk vs reward panning out with dissimilar diameters.

Only other way I can think of is making an adjustable eye in one, and a button knot in the other to link like a soft shackle.
Or
Splice linked eyes together but that can be taboo.. I just can’t see how that is mechanically different from a soft shackle.

Appreciate the thoughts, I shall not attempt the splice. Making an eye and knot, or even tying the pieces together, won’t work because the whole length has to wind up on a winch drum. I’ll just keep the short pieces around, maybe find a use eventually.

The straight bury would be the smoothest choice, on locked brummels, the second tail would need the rebraid method, which causes a 40% decrease in strength.

There isn’t much need to rebraid, it would mean pulling the length of line through the pass. A pain but easily doable since all ends are available
