Sourcing a True American Chestnut

Anyone have a good source for a non hybrid American Chestnut? I had an idea to add a few to my bonsai collection and try to emulate the mature Chestnuts that used to be more prevalent. However want to do a true species. I’m located on Long Island, but I don’t have a problem with getting whips shipped or perhaps bigger.

Do you know of any local trees in your area? Not sure who may source them - but my thought would be gathering some seed from next years crop and seeing what you can do?

I worked for one of the largest wholesale nurseries in the US (Bailey nurseries) - an hour was nothing to drive for good "stock/seed". Everything is what you value it at.

I will check how they source their stuff and let you know - plenty of good dudes still in the seedbed or propagation department that can let me know the best way

Good luck - love the idea!

I appreciate that man! Definitely got me thinking about making a run now.

St. Lawrence Nursery, Potsdam N.Y. They are zone 3, so they are cold hardy. I think they do mail order too for spring.
Thanks for the update! I had a few on order but they fell through. So I’ll check them out.

also tried getting directly involved with the American Chestnut Foundation, even offered to climb and hand pollinate/harvest the bigger ones and potentially more, but the chapter here flaked out on me.
