Soft shackles

Howdy all,
Wondering if anyone has any experience splicing soft shackles? Not specifically for tree work, more likely for recovering vehicles on site etc.

Picked up some 5/8 yalex today and keen to try make some and looking for advice, mostly on lengths needed

I’ve done a few, but not that large of diameter. There are about a half dozen different ways to make them, with some being stronger than others. Most commercial ones have a diamond knot and one leg buried into the other for easier handling. I’ve only made the Chinese buttonhole ones.
To determine the length, before cutting the rope, take the two ends and tie the knot you will be using. It will give you practice and you can determine how much rope it will take. Measure the length for the knot on one leg, then the length of shackle, form the eye, leave room to open the eye, and then bury the short leg and exit where the knot starts. Milk the slack and cut to the length of short leg.
Make sure the eye is a little loose so both legs will be loaded equally. Also set the knot by loading it while closed, rather than doing lengthwise, and always use the shackle in this configuration, don’t bend it the opposite way to connect.

@CanadianStan; Am I remembering correctly? Didn't you post a photo of a soft shackle that you'd made for yourself? I thought you might like to see this thread, and possibly weigh in with your thoughts on how you made yours.

Oh, yes. Here's a link or two.

They’re cool. Fun to make. Tying the diamond knot is an absolute pain. Do yourself a favour and paint one leg of the rope if you struggle
I made mine out of Amstel.
