Setting Only the Length Needed for Ascent

How to set your climbing line without hardware and to the length needed. When setting a line, climbers will normally put a Alpine Butterfly or some mid-line knot in the line when the tail reaches the ground, pass the tail thru the loop and pull up the line. This essentially pulls twice the line needed, half in the tree and half on the ground. This may be needed for a particular climb with redirects in the tree but when not needed, it is more efficient to only deploy what is needed.

Not sure why I never thought of passing the throwline through mid way like that, constantly always running out of rope on the ground setting up like this. Smart!

I learned that trick when I was rec climbing over a river last winter and didn't want my rope wet.
Use it almost every climb now, it's not hard to redo your canopy anchor from up top if you end up needing more rope for whatever reason.
