Seattle Snow and Ice in Pictures

It's been white here for four days now, and has snowed off and on the whole time. Only 6 inches or so in my area, but 2 feet in some outlying area...and 5 feet of new in the mountains. Rain returns tomorrow.

I shot these today.

With one subject, I shot the same image, but with different backdrops....a food ad in a newspaper picture of oranges....my black glove, my blue parka, and a yellow paper...... most are at or close to 1-1 with a macro lens....and tripod with a two way adjustable rail. 5" of snow in my area, up to 2 feet here and there, and now freezing rain, now back to snow before it warms way up tomorrow. Lots of trees and branches breaking.

Let me know your favorites.

The squiggly lines in the ice are reflections of fence rails.. Cropped image, probably 25-30mm wide.

This cropped image is barely a centimeter wide.

I had a focusing rail mounted between the tripod and camera, which allows for fine tuning the camera placement. Used mirror lock up and 10 second delay to minimize camera shake. Narrow f/stop to maximize depth of field means a slowish shutter speed. ISO of 800 to 1000. The Canon 5D mark ll's 21 megapixel full frame sensor produces a stupendous and low noise image, even at ISO's of 1600-3200. And not bad at 6400. It goes two more stops to 25,600, but it a bit noisy then.
The lens is the Canon 100 macro L f/2.8 IS, the first macro lens to have internal stabilization. But it is supposed to be turned off when mounted to a tripod, which I neglected to do. Might have affected the sharpness a tad. I had to ashcan quite a few, due to light breeze that came up now and then.

Wow the pics are really cool Roger but I really don't know how you guys live in the big fridge you are very hardy dudes. I can't stand the cold, I guess I am a wimp. The pic with the dog is cool, he seems to be enjoying it.

Glad you like 'em, oceans

If you go to my main flickr site, and check out the sets, you can find more macro stuff that isn't bad.

I've just started using the two way focusing rail, which is great for fine tuning the camera position.....maybe I'll get around to rigging some nice flash setups...I bought a ring light, but it's only a cheap LED constant on light, and seems underpowered. A ring flash would be good, for compactness, but two flashes off to each side appear to be popular among macro aficionados. (sp)

I have bellows that came with the focusing rail, but find it of little use, as it's not linked electronically to the camera, therefore can only be shot at wide open aperture, which gives a miniscule depth of field. Time for some extension tubes, perhaps...but, with the quality of the 21 mp sensor, the image can be cropped quite a bit and still keep good resolution.

It's hasn't been under 26 degrees here this year. That's not cold. When it's cool (35-45 degrees) and wet, is when it is not at all fun to work.

But then, anything over 85 degrees is no fun either, for us PNW types who are rarely exposed to extreme temperature swings.

Can I love your photographs and still not understand a word you just said?

I don't know very much about photography at all, but I sure can appreciate the fruits of someone that does!
