In my area, northwest ohio tree work is extremely slow for many of us tree guys during the winter. What other types of work do you guys do during slow periods? Besides selling firewood or plowing snow!

Tree work all year around here. 13 years in the business, and I have been lucky enough to always have year around work. Typically we do slow down to a week or 2 bag log...But this year I am already booked till February (with not many days set aside for bad weather etc).

One thing that has always helped me, is I have 2 boroughs/towns (in a wood area) that I do time and material work. If I see something that needs done, I can just do it. So if things get slow, I can always find work there.

Secondly, we do work at a local college while the students are on winter break.

Thirdly, tell customers that fall/winter is the best time to prune trees. Then you will start getting people who call to be scheduled over that time.

get out and sell all fall while its slammin busy ,and try to stack up as much winter work as possible. Current go aheads 9 total. 5 of these are winter trims. Gotta plan ahead. I do remember many slow winters, but as I look back now I realize I didnt line up enough to last. That in turn keeps you in the field getting more jobs.

Our Tree Care customers have work all year long with their spider tracked lifts. Emergency removals, storms, even rent it with operator for contractors indoors, cleaning windows, painting, electricity jobs, and on. Food for thoughts...
