Screw gate biners

Those plus the fact that ANSI says "no good"

Are there any uses for them in tree care besides rigging? Does ANSI say no in all situations for climbing? What about for attaching a figure 8, which is still backed up with a friction hitch?

To eliminate a f$#k-up dont use a screw biner in any climbing setup. You can screw them but eventualy they will screw you. I had to many times retight the screw biners to feel them and me save to use for climbing.

EMR,

Screw gates are not allowed for any part of a personal support system.

Many other rope access disciplines allow screw gates. I think that might be a hold over from the days before double auto-locking biners were so readily available.

I think Scott Prophett decked as a result of a screw gate opening.A broken back is good enough reason for me! To much movement in tree climbing for screwgates.

Excellent for attaching your handsaw to your harness.

Sh*t for everything else.

Triple action autolock carabiners can also be opened by branches/ ropes etc.

Even Petzl ball locks can get dirty when up in a tree and not shut properly.

Your carabiners are your life - watch them.

Good points. I climb only with the ball locks and sometimes they stick just bad enough to not close all the way, but at first glance they appear to be locked. I have tried graphite, but it doesnt really work. Any advise on that problem?

Try blowing out with compressed air with the gate sleeve in different positions, then lubricate with graphite after it's moving freely. At this point you're just lubricating the junk stuck under the sleeve. Being a lefty I hate those ball lockers, at least that's my excuse.

WD40 works well for cleaning and lubing up biners that have been gunked up with sap. I have been climbing on petzl ball locking carbiners for about five years now and have been very happy with them. My company just banned the use of them due to the recall so I have switched to Kong. I have only been using these for a couple days but I am happy with them so far.

Yes indeed he did. 6+months recovery time.

and just recently had back surgery to fix problems caused by that screw gate induced fall.

Screw gates are satans biner. for a climbing system.

I agree with everyone. I had a srew-gate biner open up on me. I didn't think it was a problem. as I was setting straps for a crane and rappelling down with a figure eight. I still don't know what happened. The guy in a bucket cutting yelled "You're not tied in!" Looking behind me, I saw my rope and a dangling figure 8 and open screw gate, the gate itself bent sideways. I was at the time standing 80' in an elm on a wet morning. I kept the srew gate as a reminder. I use it for my hand saw scabbard now.

These are all lessons that I am more than happy to learn from others instead of experiencing for myself. I'm glad you didn't get hurt in that one Chris and here's hoping that Scott has a full and fast recovery.

I also had a screw gate come off as well!

One of my first climbs ever, 40' up a monterey pine, the screw-gate biner was clipped to a figure 8, jumped off the tree to repel the 8 was side loaded and some how (who the hell knows) all I heard was click click and zippin down the tree, luckily grabed hold of a crotch and the RIGHT side of the rope, haven't used screw gate since...

A while ago i was playing with a Dmm swivel biner as my rope snap. I was tied in and out on a limb belted in. I looked down at my lanyard and it was inside the biner. Some how the lanyard rubbed across the gate enough to open the auto locker.

What is the biner of choice for most of you?

use a screw gate to clip your belay device to your rock climbing harness. Maybe a big dog's leash?

I wouldn't put it anyhwere near tree climbing gear because somebody might use it for the wrong purpose.
