Screamer's!

Screamer\'s!

Hey all, If you wanted to use a "screamer" in line to reduce the shock on a dropped top with a real tight drop zone and no room to really let her run, can you rig it with a tailboard block instead of a heavy duty pulley? (we are talking 1000 lbs or less on the wood being dropped). Obviously a heavy duty pulley "in line" with steel biners would be ideal but how would you safely incorporate a tailboard block? Rigging prusik around the block to a steel biner to the screamer? Anyone?

Re: Screamer\'s!

Shock load 1K lbs on a steel biner? I don't think so! Maybe a 3/4 inch steel clevis yeah.

Can't let it run? Then use a rated nylon strap to anchor your block as a shock absorber.

I'd be using a 1.25-1.5 bull line to catch loads that heavy.

What the heck's a screamer anyway?

So a one foot long screamer when unzipped is then two feet long right?
Handy!

It depends on the manufacturer.
They're like the 'break-a-way' chainsaw lanyards that Buckingham makes.
They also incorporate them on 'deceleration' lanyards.
We actually tested a deceleration lanyard. I was extremely impressed with the results.
I, personally, would NOT use one in a rigging system. There are plenty of other options.

Re: Screamer\'s!

Yeah, it reduces the shock load up to 2 or even 3 KN. I have never used one but it seemed worth a try. Then I realized I don't even have a heavy duty pulley cuz I always just use blocks. So i was trying to find a safe way to rig it up with one of my CMI tailboard blocks.

Re: Screamer\'s!

Adding a Screamer to rigging makes me shudder...brrrrrrrrrrr!

Yates does make industrial Screamers though. One of their products is used by NASA in the engine mounts of their rocket engine dynomemeters. If the engine gets jumpy they want to have a flexible way to hold it down while they turn off the power.

There seems like too many other methods to use than building in a 'stretch'. Like Taylor says...smaller pieces.

Re: Screamer\'s!

Plus its hard to take money if it costs you $20 everytime you make a big cut cause you are destroying a one time use rock limbing tool in a bad application.

Re: Screamer\'s!

Actually I'm going to buy a few. They're a heck of a lot cheaper than a Dillon Dynamometer, and should let me know when I exceed X amount of loading on my catch depending on which one I buy.

According to their literature they're accurate to within 4 percent!

A poor man's dynamometer!

My thought too, why not just climb a little higher and take a smaller piece? I work in postage stamp yards all the time, how tight are we talking here?

Re: Screamer\'s!

It will be fine just to go a little higher and take a smaller top. The tree REALLY does taper out on top (young Sequoia)and there isn't much up there. It's kind of near (over) a corner of the house, garden, fence etc. It's all good!

Do not assume that it will be deployed on every rigging cut. One might last 8 cuts, depends on the shock load.

Wesspur advertised screamers for rigging in their magazine.

Screamers were originally developed for ice climbers. There is a rule in ice climbing: Never fall

Ice is an even more variable medium than wood.

My plan would be that if the only solution was to use a Screamer then I might not do the job. That would mean it is very dangerous.

The example of using a Screamer 'just in case' groundie doesn't know how to handle a dynamic lower is a place where no one should ever have to go. This thinking is why arbos are killed.

Maybe they were thinking of independent sub-contracting removal climbers like me Tom?

I get to work with lots of companies and crews that I'm unfamiliar with. Screamers would come in very handy if a rope man goofs yu know.

I've worked with great rope men, and others not so great.

I'd like to thank BWK for starting this thread and teaching an old dog a new trick.

Thanks again mate!

yeah...and people like Pete Donzelli who are dead and Sebastian Junger who was injured but has gone onto another career.

I'm speaking for me, not a blanket for what other folks might find useful. Still doesn't seem like a safe tool.
