sayings associated with rope (mostly)

There was this great website called the Word Detective that is no longer maintained but he had a bunch of great etymology stuff. He jokes that people love to say every phrase comes from some sailing thing or other

And he made up the Committee to Ascribe Nautical Origins to Everything (CANOE) as the nefarious force behind all these fake etymologies.

Was doing some searching online grin this thread, and I guess there's a CANOE Facebook page that might have some good tho possibly fake rope phrases

There are a few TreeBuzzers who have made at least one circumnavigation of Patrick O'Brian's 6,500+ page epic "Master and Commander'

There are several companion books. One is titled 'A Sea of Words' by Dean King. Most of us are 'grass combing lubbers' and get lost in the language of early 1800's nautical language. On my first voyage I did pretty good but ended up grabbing SoW, Pretty soon I just kept reading and stuck with the story.

CANOE sounds like fun...I'll have to paddle into it.

the pic is an arborist I met when I worked in New Orleans in the years '06 and '07
