sapsucker damage

Looking for the best solution for sapsucker damage on a cypress tree. Wrapping the tree in burlap is feesable and hardware cloth isn't out of the question either but it is a large area with branches included. What has worked for you guys? Also read, to remove whatever in the summer. Do sapsuckers only feed in the winter? Or is it harmful to the tree to have it wrapped in summer? Thanks

Six pack of beer, deck chair and a pellet gun.

No really, that's the best option. I've never heard of a fool proof protection. Since they return to the same tree over and over, if you scare them off for a few weeks, they may not return for the rest of the season.

Um not my property and can't see this homeowner using a gun, period. Also, I do think woodpeckers on are the protected list, even sapsuckers. Thanks

Nuthin special, where is that guy in your avatar from? Looks as if he is in a museum showcase. Do you have an Arborist museum in Ontario?

I use the old pellet gun and and a six pack line when clients ask how to deal with squirrels or woodpeckers, always gets a laugh.

No museum here, we're pretty advanced here in Ontario but a museum is still 50 years away. My staff made me a figureine in my likeness a few years ago. That's what they think of me I guess. Just used a book for a backdrop instead of my messy desk.

True their behavior is easily altered, so repellents can also work. cayenne, hot mustard, etc. "Chew - Stop" is a spray-on product

my aim at pool used to improve w # of beers (up to a point); does that work with pellet guns too?

Thanks Guy, maybe a Dr Dendro?

I wrapped it. Mostly because I had a roll of burlap.
Does anybody know why the bird wouldn't just peck through the burlap?

Actually sapsuckers were included in the Charismatic Carya--2007/--, the followup to Ill Illinoinensis. But their time will come again.

They can peck thru butrlap yes but licking the leaking is how they feed and that is where burlap stymies thier activity and sends them thither. If the c;lient says too ugly then take it off--birdss tend to stay away from dry wells i'm told,

O and thanks for the honorary PhD; goes with the GED nicely.

Follow up is: The burlap seems to have thrown this bird into a frenzy now. The other trunk was clean but now it is riddled with holes. I am going there today to wrap the smaller trunk.
