Well, I got the information from a conversation on the phone with them, but I'd want to talk to them again before I quoted them. No need, perhaps... here's a quote from Sherrill Tree's catalog...
"...like the latest version of Velocity, does not have Samson's once used SureGrip coating. Unfortunately, the SureGrip coating presented a tacky feel that never found great acceptance among climbers who were looking for the best interaction between rope and friction (climbing) hitch. The removal of this SureGrip coating makes all the difference!"
Pretty much the same information I gave. I never asked when the change took place for either Velocity or Vortex, but got the feeling it was quite recently.
Since most of these coatings are urethane based, I'd expect to see brighter or "newer" looking colors, more pliability and a smoother feel to the jacket... but that's a guess. Seems to fit in with the OP's original concerns about the rope, though. I'd think the differences would be quite noticeable, having seen a rigging rope with and without the coatings a few years back.
