Samson Vortex Issues

Samson stopped using their SureGrip coating on Vortex rope... customers complained about the tacky/sticky feel of the coating and how the rope's interaction with the hitch changed as the coating wore off. Newer hanks of Vortex have a noticeably different look and feel as a result. The coatings also affect the rope's stiffness and hand, etc. so I believe that what you're seeing is perfectly normal.

Is there a reference for this?

Well, I got the information from a conversation on the phone with them, but I'd want to talk to them again before I quoted them. No need, perhaps... here's a quote from Sherrill Tree's catalog...

"...like the latest version of Velocity, does not have Samson's once used SureGrip coating. Unfortunately, the SureGrip coating presented a tacky feel that never found great acceptance among climbers who were looking for the best interaction between rope and friction (climbing) hitch. The removal of this SureGrip coating makes all the difference!"

Pretty much the same information I gave. I never asked when the change took place for either Velocity or Vortex, but got the feeling it was quite recently.

Since most of these coatings are urethane based, I'd expect to see brighter or "newer" looking colors, more pliability and a smoother feel to the jacket... but that's a guess. Seems to fit in with the OP's original concerns about the rope, though. I'd think the differences would be quite noticeable, having seen a rigging rope with and without the coatings a few years back.

I weigh about 200 pounds and I've A couple of different hitches and cordage. I'm using the HH2 to for single line, just can't seem to find the combo. Suggestions?

Are you on Vortex? If so, 9mm ArbPro with 5 or 6 wraps tied short is a good place to start. Set it hard and take up slack at least 4 times before climbing on any combo to make sure it is working the way you want it to and to give it stability for your climb.
