SAKA update and answers to issues for fast climbers.

Nice job. Quite the effort building your own ascender too.

One thing you mentioned in the video is that folks that climb fast (very fast?) can cause slippage due to the rope tension from the foot ascender. Speed and the magnitude of the tension don't seem closely related as I would think most of the tension is the result of the climbers weight. What is your thinking there?

I agree, I think the weight, slow or fast will be similar, but the movement when the rope is weighted is the critical issue. It hits that cam with more force if there is lateral movement because the speed at which the foot is moving. This is the factor that causes a more slip when feet are flying.
Point being, if the feet truly go straight up and down the rope, just like the rope was a solid cable, then there should be little impact on the cam causing difficulty with engagement.
Hope that makes since. I never imagined there was so much that could go into a rope walker.

Great video of a great device! Richard have you thought of a possible fair lead into the ascender to help with the slippage?

So I guess what I'm saying, is if you try to put a fairlead below it interferes with the stride and if you try to put it above, the tension line prevents it from being effective. Interesting thought though and I'm not just dismissing it.

This is what I had in mind, being on the bottom of the ascender. The semi circular part would clip and attach to the existing bolt. The size, shape and location of the half circle would have to be determined to force the rope to engage the cam.

I've been climbing with my diy "saka" ever since Richard first showed us how to make them and it has been very good to me.

I recently paid up for the latest SAKA largely because of the ascender of Richard's design and used it for the first time today. Not only does it improve on reducing slipping, but it is also easier to open the cam when you want to remove it from the rope.

Very nicely done and money well spent. Thanks yoyoman!

They are now available on climbingInnovations.com
The mini still is not in production.

Thank you for the feedback , I appreciate it.

Kicking myself over and over for not taking you up on snagging one at the Charlotte "special". The new employer gave me the "alternative" version and it's like a 1975 dogde pick up compared to a Ferrari. Heck my homemade job is better than the "alternative".

How can I get my hands on one of these in Canada? I only see US as a shipping option on the website.
Yes, we have not added international shipping yet...
Domestic is free shipping and I add 10.00 for Canada and most other countrys. If you like, my PayPal is richard@mumford.org. If you want extra bungee it is 5.00 and extra footloop is 15.00 USD. Just send and add the notes and request.

Thanks,

Richard
