RWing in a large Maple

When you get to that top tie and set up in DdRT, are you using rings or a friction saver? One of my favorite Canopy Anchors for SRT is using a Ring-ring Friction Saver with a stopper behind the small ring. I have a supple 8mm retrieval line in a small pouch which I tie to the stopper knot and then pitch the bag out to the crown. From your description, I would most likely do exactly as you do with the first 90' in SRT and switch over to lanyard/lanyard to continue, however once at the TIP, I would set the canopy anchor described above and climb SRT in the crown. This would allow more efficient use of the length of climb line at hand. Having not climbed conifers much above 130', I'm not sure, although this video does show a few things...don't mind the cheesiness.

The POV footage is 'moss'.

SRT for spar work was just referring to felling out spar sections, and whatever length of descent between sections on a spar made easy by using the RW.

I dont have time to watch moss' video right now but I will when I get in. I avoid using friction savers in big conifers....they have an uncanny ability to get stuck, or wrap themselves around a limb on the way down. More trouble than they're worth. Believe me, you learn. Plus, descent Ddrt while working one side of a top, then the trunk-tie to go back up and work the other is pretty straight forward and risk-free.

The SRT spar descent's, I find to be an unnecessary waste of effort for anything under 40 ft sections, and even then I probably wouldn't bother. Spurring down a tree is really easy, and uncomplicated. Thanks again

Derrick,

I really like the compactness and simplicity of your Basal Anchor config and am thinking of simplifying mine. Here is what I am thinking of going to:

Splice a large Ring to the rope (instead of a rigging plate). Next, pass the prusik cord through the ring and girth hitch it to either a rigging plate or figure 8. This small modification moves the attachment point to a more accessible location than being cinched right to the tree.

What do you think about this config ?

that would work real good. I almost never use the multiple attachment points, so a ring would do everything that this does for me.
