Rubbing branches...any decay?

I wish! That decay was a good 15-20feet up the tree. The stump was as solid as a rock, in fact it was full of rock too, i ruined every saw chain including the spare I had with me!

Tom, I didn't get a chance to inspect the old spike wounds but the timber is all in my yard so will cut it up one day, don't hold your breath though.

As said above the decay section was from well above the graft and caused by bad pruning/storm damage. I think we can summise that in this case grafting had no ill effects on the tree.

As ekka says it probably helped in this case, it mave even been helping to hold the co dominant stem in place, I sure wasn't going to cut it until I had too!!
 
i've seen some of these too, specifically above crotches and truly grafted givng the joint strength. i wuz hoping Wulke would jump in here with some secret way to force that; and go on more about 'modding' a codom to more natural joint, at least without included bark.
