Has anyone got to try the Ropetek Wraptor?

A few weeks ago Paul Cox, the inventor, sent over a demo machine for me to play with for a while. I can honestly say my body has never felt so good.

It reminds me of when I bought my mini, a toy you'll never want anyone else to see, for fear of your competition working too easy. This is one of those tools.

I've been working 6 days a week lately, as I picked up another job part time with an estate care company. I am one of two on the tree crew. Typically I am in a tree maybe once a day, when there is no access with their spider lift. There is nothing easier than throwing a line over a branch, like you would in any beginning steps of SRT. The unit attaches to the rope in seconds, faster than my old SRT setup that I hated using. Start the machine up, and off you go at 90 feet per minute.

Because of my part time job, I've found I've been doing some small jobs solo. With the Wraptor I ascend up, get to work. If I notice there is too much brush getting piled up, it's cake work to come down and clean it up. When your done, ride back up and you feel like you never left the tree.

We were doing a 4 way cable in a big maple last week. One of our slippery hands dropped some tools. I volunteered with a smile to zip down, pick them up, then ascend back up 60'.

It's just too darn easy. I even fear posting this as any competition will see it, but Paul deserves the props on a top notch tool for the arb world.

Here's a vid from the other day, ascending a nasty Willow tree. It's just a 45-50' ascent, but you can see how easy it is when encountering a limb on the way up. Just adjust the throttle as necessary and push the limb out of the way.

Check out Paul's site, and contact him for availability of DEMO units.

Netree has one as well and swears by it.

I really do wish i could afford one. It's just not in the budget right now.

I do fear though that the trees I climb daily aren't tall enough for such an expense (average would be 50-60ft, very rarely do I break the 80-100ft mark).

I have to get a GRCS first, besides, footlocking keeps me in shape.

When I blow a knee I'll be all over a Wraptor, I've heard nothing but great stuff about'em.

Couple of question:

How much does it cost?

What do you do with it once you get to the top?
Can you leave it on your access rope as you work?

I am in the same boat as blinky. I need to purchase a grcs first (and probably a chip truck and chipper would help) then I'll be all about it.

What's the max. Weight capasity.

Costs the same as a GRCS, but will get used everyday. $2500 with the unit, rope, and rope bag.

Lift cap. is 300 lb, you shouldn't be in the tree if you are heavier than that.

What I do for ascent is, send up the line and tie off at the base of the tree. Go up, set your double rope setup, and leave the machine there. You can either have a groundy untie it, and belay it down. Depending on the tree I'll leave it there, then when I'm done and on the ground, untie at the base and tie the other end of the rope with a square knot, and create a big loop and send her down.

You don't want to work off it, kinda like any SRT rig.

I got to try the Ropetek Wraptor in California several months ago. It really is an amazing device; pretty wild to climb a 250' redwood and not even break a sweat!

Paul is a great guy and a day to day climber as well. Hope it really takes off for him
