Ropetek Wraptor - what a ride

I have to admit. I am not one that uses power tools, not for home repair, not for tree work(if i did any). BUT when it was time to climb a redwood this past weekend, June5/6/2009, I used the ropetek wraptor a gas powered tool on my rope to get me up that 200 plus foot.

here is the video of another climber.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRixx6UQghI

the trees are well over 200 foot at the tie in. It took me about 2 minutes to ascend on my climb. This climber took about 3 minutes to make that climb.

The item is not a new thought to the industry BUT very new to me.

I see this as a label, body saving tool that can save years of wear on you.

Can anyone else chime in on this?

I see the one issue is the noise, so you wear your eye plugs. This is only an ascend system, not to work in the tree with, as you ride the wraptor up, you are tied into your descend or secondary line, into your climbing line on the tool and into the line above the device with a hitch. I felt safe as can be with only a few (me) fears.

Paul, the person behind this, was with me on my first time on this. So for me, a none tool person, this was easy to use and a great pleasure to have on my first 200 foot plus climb.

jz - sweet times

that just seems like cheating to me... i've always thought i earned being at the top of a tree...

At some level I agree with you. Kind of like backcountry skiing/riding. the slog up the hill makes 'earning the turns' so much sweeter.

On the other hand, what is he goal of the climb? To spend X hundred calories rope walking or to be in the crown to do something?

On more than one tree I setup a floating false crotch and hauled climbers up using my ATV. Certainly wasn't cheating anymore than using a Silky or a chainsaw.

I like Tools!

Or, Toyls as a friend calls them. Since toys aren't tax-deductible and tools are, there is a new classification of things that fall in between the two.

Maybe in a way it was using a tool to do the job.

Why beat up your body when you do not have to? this is not about my climb but more the tool that did the job.

Could you see this in your goody bag? getting into trees that you are working in. Using the energy that was use to get into the tree to work the tree instead. Going home not sore or over tired, getting more jobs completed in the day.

So go back to using a hand saw and see where your production time goes.

SO sure I did not earn my climb, but i stood on that branch and smiles just as proud - as we all do.

would be the atlas

It's been talked about on here before. Weights in at about 25LBs. Has a climb rate of 10ft per sec.

The Atlas Rope Ascender

The ATLAS in operation vids on bottom of page.

OK so it is faster and quieter. But do you want to ascend into a tree at 10 feet per second?? It weighs 25lbs where the Ropetek Wraptor weighs 20. It needs to be charged every 600 feet, Wraptor does 6000 on 1 tank. Atlas costs what $22,000 ???? Wraptor $2500.

Do you really think the Atlas is better suited for tree work????

I set it up with a rope grab ahead of it in case of slipping or failure then added a ring on rope grab Wich I can repel from in case of needing to decend quickly because bees or whatever reason
