Rope

KMIII 7/16" for my access line. If I'm going to work a tree SRT I change over from ascent to using an I'd. KMIII has held up really well for me over the years.

When I DdRT climb I use Blaze. Fly is a second choice, but only by a little bit.

DdRT = Fly or Yale XTC Plus
SRT Access = Edelrid powerstatic dry 11mm

All the above ropes knot very well and have sufficient energy absorption to pass EN1891 Type A.

A little bounce is a very good thing, and is defintely my preference over splice-ability.

My reliables are true blue, arbor master and safety blue.

Arbor plex works fine too. Have also recently nearly worn out some wall tree pro red (12 strand) which is good rope but not as good a wax coating as the Samson lines.

I once bought some 3 strand "tree master" just to try it. Had to set it aside. Its durability is impressive but its too stiff for me. It made me appreciate the braided lines again.
The tree master found a new role permanently installed in my rope puller come along. And a piece of it I made into a lanyard which it works good for that too.

Those thin ropes are great for you ace climber types, but I'm not that concerned about weight and rarely use ascenders or stuff like that.
More concerned with getting a good grip and durability and feel like a fatter 1/2" line gives me that.

They are important considerations Mike. Smooth 11mm lines aren't good for big hands without sticky gloves.

Blue Streak... with splittails made (by Nick!) from XTC fire...

After starting out with 4 strand manilla that flaked off as your hitch passed over it- I got turned on to hard lay three strand ( By the late E.G. Barley)that was more like lariat rope than climbing rope- we used to drag it behind the pick up to break it in- sure coiled nice. I switched to safety blue. After bouncing around a bit I am back with new England Hi-vee( colored safety blue). I just haven't had the chance to try the little stuff but I feel like smaller diameter would be harder for my gnarled meat hooks to grasp. Note: after using the blakes hitch for a while I am mostly back to taut line hitch. Yes it migrates but that always keeps me honest with checking my system. I sometimes think rookies should be forced to learn this way just so they understand the mechanics of a double line system insidew and out before they go swithing to some fancy french prusikk rig.

I never wear gloves when climbing and haven't had a problem with gripping velolcity. Kunf foo grip I guess.

Its just another ergonomics issue NoBivvy - Whatever our handsize or strength, gripping 1/2" rope and less all day everyday has consequences. Its just a matter of time.

I have no pain and good strength in my hands, but I also know that they are stiff with potentially arthritic joints.

Heres a test: turn a hand palm up and apply steady pressure to straighten the fingers. What colouration do you see?

My guess for time served tree climbers, is pale with blotches of red. That shows constricted blood vessels because the muscles are rarely stretched properly. Now just think about what we do to the rest of our body when we don't stretch! A build up of toxins, knots and dysfunction leading to future problems.

I love those bad ole days stories skew!

Everyone has to learn the way you recommend over here - to pass the climbing proficiency test, one criteria is to tie the 3 knot system with a single line.

I think the blaze or arbormaster gold both yale cordage for me, never been a lover of stiffness in ropes and thes are both nice and limp. I do a lot of coiling and throwing in big trees for limb advance so supple and a nice feel in the hand when throwing is a priority for me, both these ropes siut me down to the ground, but everyone climbs differnetly and will have personal faves for different reasons.

XTC Plus - I don't get to see or try out those new ropes you all are talking about without a significant investment of $$$ to get some out here, then...what if I don't like it?
Thats one of the challenges, not like we can nip off to a seminar of training session to see and try out new stuff! Boo Hoo.

i'm so sad.

I've got a 240ft hank of 1/2" KMIII I use for high srt access.

I climb dbrt on Hi Vee Saftey Blue or a 200ft. hank of Blaze. I perfer the 1/2 Safety Blue. I started on Arborplex years ago and moved to the white safety blue, then to the red dyed saftey blue and finally to the high vee when it came out.

Anyone remember the red dyed saftey blue that preceeded the High Vee? The red faded away rather quickly leaving it pinkish.
