Root gels

Do not add anything back to your backfill, just prune the roots clean and they will re-sprout just fine. You can try a mychor product, but I'm not sold on them, but I would definitely NOT fertilize.

If you want to read it, first you'd have to buy it; ~$28 USD, it's a bargain compared to the stripped-down, fragmented, user-unfriendly A300 Standard parts.

Sam, how do you know that backfill would not need amending? Kinda depends on the soil and site, dunnit? Hypothetically speaking, at this point.

Guy, I suppose it does, but why change the composition and drainage characteristics of the site? It must have been ok before hand since the tree is growing there. I feel you would run into more problems by changing the soil than just leaving it alone.

While I'd agree that like pruning it's unwise to mess with the dirt for no good reason, there are many possible good reasons. This was a site under construction, remember, so what was once ok may no longer be.

You're right that it's harder to diagnose what you can't see, but there are ways...

Well I figured you guys would like an update. Plans changed again and they were worried about 'the tree falling over if it was windy, if we pruned off the roots in that zone'. Or at least that's what they told me and they decided the roof corner needed done.
So last week I got sent back to remove the tree. Took a good chunk of the day but through my suggestions they thought this was the best course to go with.
So thanks for all the information maybe next time I can put some of it to use.
