Rock Exotica Down Rigger

Thompson says it was designed in collaboration with Jaime Merritt, inventor of the Akimbo, so I assume that there's a relationship between the two. Probably like the Harken Ninja, and the Notch Jetstep.

Morgan block is so sexy. We demo’d a prototype and didn’t find it to fit with our rigging needs, but kinda want one just to fidget with…

Used my Morgan block yesterday, In the right situation it is perfect. Like when it’s difficult for the groundie to get close to the trunk of the tree to use a porty

Yea, I don't see $150 in additional functionality in the Morgan block... or even $1.50... I can see why someone would be curious to know if they're the same tool, what with the crazy upcharge to say that it's a Thompson.

In fact, it looks like you get one with labels for less money...

To confirm, yes, the downrigger is the direct descendant of the Thompson block.

My guess is RE’s processes and connections make the downrigger much cheaper to produce than the Thompson block.

I’ve been using a sample downrigger for over a year (maybe two?), and I prefer it most of the time. The guys I contract for also like using it. It’s worth whatever RE is asking, though I haven’t looked myself.

I hope to get another and use two in a 3:1 as a speedline tensioning system that eliminates a portawrap for speedy turnaround. We’ll see.

I toyed with the configuration at a trade show, but obviously didn’t get to load it. I’m curious, not convinced. It won’t be a waste to own two, anyway.

What’s really fun is using the downrigger in a double block rig once you pass its capacity in normal configuration. I used a hd sling and biner on the pieces, and the DR as the block. Butter

Did the original presentation of the Morgan Block have three friction settings vs two on the new version?

I found a copy of the Morgan Block manual and indeed it is two, same as now. If you misused it and routed the rope on the outside of the lower pivot/block that would be lower 3rd friction but probably a pointless setting. Do not try it CYA fine print
