Rigging Hubs

Hey if you were to set a rigging hub to 'float', what knots would you use to float it? I really can't tell from any of the video. I can tell where a girth hitch is used but not the others. Anyone?

That's a damn good question. I first thought buntline or scaffold knot but they would be hard to untie once you loaded the system. Would a non-cinching knot do the job?

It looks like something non-cinching but I can't figure it out. I floated my large dmm block once with a scaffold knot...oops. Won't do that again. Maybe an anchor bend?

While you are at it whiz what's it like working with the large DMM block? I have the small one and it's sweet, would like the large one and just wondering what size pieces you are taking out when using it. Also are you using 5/8 bull rope or larger? I really only want to use 9/16 or 5/8 with that block. I really want that block specifically for blocking out trunk wood.

Hey Swing. The large block is really nice and I've only used 5/8" and 9/16". I've had a length of 3/4" stable braid for many years but I don't remember the last time I used it. With the large block, for me it's not really about the size of the pieces it's capable of. It's just refined and has nice action to it. I've had only a few times when I've used the rated spindle but there's probably a lot of situations where I either forget to use it...or I really can't make time to. I'm still in the learning curve with it but I notice that for as handsom as it is...the line is not recessed in the cheeks much at all and that's typically running rigging and when routed near coarse bark, it's exposed. I'm sorry but it is. On that big CMI block, the line is a little more protected. On that mondo Hobbs block, it's much better protected. Anyone got one? I might trade if it's in nice condition. Viking and I crushed some impressive loads into it last summer and it was exciting. Hey and thanks for slamming that log into it when it was below my final point...greenie

Damn it Whiz I always wanted to buy the Hobbs block from Wesspur but at the time I could not afford it now that I am in the position to do so it is no longer available. I will just get the large block and use it I am sure that it will BE MORE than worth it. Thanks for the review. Look in your email I have resent the PDF file and it should work now.

[/ QUOTE ]I've had the smaller 5/8th CMI for yearts and it's well designed, as you point out with the larger one.

I also have a 3/4" Bailey's knock off Hobbs, with the big sheaves. Great block, and it cost me very little. Dunno how much, have had it for ~15 years.

When Hattier worked at Lanphere in Cleveland they had a brand new one on the shelf right? Once when I was visiting him there he had it dropped down to $70. NOT lying! But did Wz grab it up? Aw naw man it was gonna be there for a LONG time. not. <kicking self in backside>
