Retrieval Line in SRT - Thoughts, recommendations, lessons to share?

Hello All,

I'm just getting into SRT. I have a couple ropes, with one being 100'. Until now, I've been using half the rope to raise the Alpine Butterfly Knot and Quickie up to the limb. Within the first couple climbs, I realize what a poor use of my climbing rope this presents. It seems it would be better to attach a separate retrieval line and preserve the utility/availability of the the climbing rope.

My question is if there are any thoughts about a retrieval line. I would imagine that I'd use 100' of 8mm accessory line. Am I on the right path? Any thoughts, recommendations, or lessons to share?

Thank you,

ZK

I keep some 8 or 9mm in a small rope bucket. I also use a Niteize Camjam Large to allow me to easily suspend it off the ground so it doesn't get (as) tangled in brush.

The small cordage can be a pain if you have to really pull on the retrieval line, but a foot or hand ascender still grabs mine well enough for some extra help.

I think you're on the right track and that will work just fine

Seperate retrieval line can definitely be nice. I like to not have a retrieval line hanging esp when theres rigging. Less ropes to keep track of. Also if I didnt bang my TIP w/ throwball, Ill clip a short ddrt line as my retrieval. Get to my initial TIP then use the ddrt to alternate/ advance to my final TIP. I tend to just come back to my tip when im done so I coil the retrieval while working then let it down when done. Its easier to advance the srt line if working with the end instead of midline.

I use 5mm acc cord (regular 1200lb acc cord, not ultra cord) cause I can fit 150' of it in a small Weaver line mug and weighs in under a pound. Sewed an eye in one end for smoother retrieval.

I use it at work some but where I really use it is rec climbing (where I typically have a long hike in to the tree). It's a Godsend only having to trek in with half the rope weight.

for retrieval I got a length of Edlerid Powerloc, just 4mm, as I figured it's plenty strong, and small;
I am finding that it has quite a bit of stretch, when I go to pull the rope down. I would be interested to find the most static accessory cord out there.

Paracord works for me. 1200 ft rolls on eBay are affordable (usually less than the cost of two rolls of throw line) and then you have plenty to leave bookmarks in favourite trees that you rec climb. I bought a dark colour so it is not noticeable to anyone not actually looking for it. I have about ten trees scattered about that I return to semi-regularly and I still have quite a bit left from one roll. The bookmark becomes the retrieval line when I pull my rope up and set the TIP.

Rope tails are so much easier to manage in SRS than MRS. The extra rope that lays on the ground can be bagged or coiled and secured off the ground. If the climber needs to haul up the tail its easy to accommodate.

The cord I used for haulback was ¼". Low stretch and cheap. Every once in a while it was called into duty to lower small pieces. Set a sling with an HMS biner/Munter and have control.

For book marking I'd lower out my gear using the ¼" then use it to set paracord or throwline to bookmark.
