Retrievable Friction Saver Help!?

Hey guys! I want a friction saver that I can set and retrieve from the ground. My climbing line has a spliced eye. I was wondering what's out there that my spliced eye would pass through both rings easily. Also what size retriver ball I would need. Thanks!

You guys can advertise all the fancy shit you want but ....

Pintos suck with getting throwlines caught between the cheek plate and the sheave.

As far as an easy friction saver to set from the ground, the simpler the better. Two rings, different diameters. Take your pick of the ring to ring style friction savers out there

The retrieval ball will depend on the R2R but most of them come with the appropriate retrieval ball. Alternatively you can consult this chart for an “official” answer or go to your local hardware store and find the most appropriately sized washer and tie some throwline to it

Or stop wasting time setting a ring to ring from the ground and foot lock or SRT up there :)

Thimbles in place of rings retrieve more reliably. Becasue the diameter of the opening never changes on a thimble, the retreval ball to retrevial thimble ratio size can be very small. This makes the system retrevial more consistant and better.

Is there a spliced eye on both ends of your rope? I use either classic 2 ring friction saver or a Dan House Rope Sleeve and get it up and down with the non-spliced end.

If both ends are spliced, I'd use the 2 ring and put a ball on the end or use throw line when getting it down tied to the eye.

Or the MARCS...

Man, that chart is handy! I'm printing this as a supplement for the Tree Climbing Companion. Thanks.

I just can't get away from the rope sleeves - leather, conduit. or MARCS. If you really need a ring & ring, it'll be hard to beat the cost of a homemade one like @theatertech87 suggested, especially if you already have a couple of the parts.

Just tape or strap the webbing loop so it doesn’t get stuck on stuff on the way down

@whoever mentioned the FimblSaver? I love mine and would highly recommend it. Due to the non life critical metal system (rope inside thimble) it’s a much better system if you’re going to be dropping your R2R over concrete

I've been a lurker for years on TB and it pleases me that we are all working on a handy method to get a solution (or solutions) to this problem. I mean this in the most supportive way.

I'm initially from the big&little ring era. Then the ring and pulley, etc. Due to my locale and the other options available, a leather or conduit friction sleeve is my basic tool. I'd have to look up in Tree Climber's Companion how to set the other systems.

Maybe my contribution here doesn't specifically answer the OP's question. Jon will come to understand simulating the scenario low and slow, when the sun is down or its raining, will answer his questions.

I've observed Mumford's use/promotion of a 5-7mm cord to do an intermediate positioning over trying to manipulate throw line. Makes sense and is economical to have a specific application line for manipulating this specific hardware.

I'm recalling using the pop-bottle-trick, but with a twig, to remotely get a throw line jumped out of the space between the pulley and cheek plate. That's in my bag of tricks, but isn't as profitable timewise, as running a cord that wouldn't ever jump out.

But maybe I could come up with a solution at the $300-500 price point. Y'all would be throwing money at me to get one in your hands. ;)

The new rope guide twinline is in that price bracket and does exactly what you're talking about (thought its use and function are slightly different) but if you've got that much coin to spend, it is a really slick piece of gear.

If you go the build it your own route, these songs are awesome https://www.treestuff.com/store/catalog.asp?item=438 I own probably 30 in various lengths and being stitched between the eyes keeps them from getting caught on anything.
There eyes are decently sized to girth hitch really well

What is the WLL of those in a girth hitch? It says "choke hold" is 960 lbs... I'd guess a girth is lower than that.

So if your looking for a friction saver, ring type and leather cambium savers are available. The Weaver Leather Cambium Saver can be pretty easy to install and retrieve. Retrieval is as easy as it gets, just tie a figure eight knot just above the eye splice and it will pull the cambium saver down. It's even easy to install while in the tree when you need to advance your climbing system or have another tie in point.

Search You Tube, there are some great videos to help you make your decision.

I have use the Weaver for years. I still love it.

I got those rings at Ace Hardware store for less than $1 they work pretty good, you can also use the rings from your throw bags.
