replacement rubbers for the big shot

there is a big shot in our shop that somebody won in a climbing competition. I am horrible with a throwline on a good day, so I am considering using this popular crutch (if it saves time, is it really a crutch?). The problem is that when I pull back on the rubbers, there are visible cracks throughout. I have seen a scar on the face of a co-worker attained by the big-shot gone wrong (improper pole lock), and am concerned for my own safety when using potentially faulty rubbers (as we all should be). I wouldn't climb on a frayed rope, and I am sure neither would any of you.
Any and all comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

BEWARE OF FAULTY RUBBERS

Words to live by. I have found the bigshot to be an additional tool in the arsenal for really high targets but not a replace ment for throwing.

Throwing - I hear you. I have days were I can't hit the easiest crotch and others where I can hit difficult ones every time.

Replace the rubbers if they're questionable. No sense taking a chance.

When you do put on the new rubbers, be sure to scrub the horns of the BS clean. I use some brake cleaner and a Scotch Brite pad. Then scrub with soap and water. Apply a light coat of liquid dish soap. Don't let the rubbers get twisted when you slide them on. Also, make sure they are pulled evenly and to the same length. If not, you'll end up like one of mine. It had a hook to the left. I could track the windage by the course of the line just like tracers.

You should consider putting on a release too. I've talked with some users you get a string release from a compound bow. Tie a loop of cord onto the BS pouch and aim high!

I wouldn't be without my BS. My shoulders will ache if I throw too hard. I do make it a point to still hand throw to keep my [low] skill level from falling :)

so where do I get the replacements, is there a kit? when I was a kid we used big fat surgical tubing(like on a wrist rocket) and we tied a knot in one end, the bottom half of the old clickable ball point pen in the other, stuck them into water faucets to fill them and they would shoot just as far as those fancy water cannons the kids have today.
oh, yeah we're talking trees......

My friend made me a big shot copied from ones I had seen before. I tried to use surgical tubing from a hospital supply place in my town. the tubing worked o.k. for a few pulls but then cracked and split. So I bought the replacement kit from Sherrills. It seems to be made of thicker rubber and it sure lasts longer...

I had to replace my tubes while down in the Triangle are of NC last week. Took it into the Vermeer store and they put it on for me forno extra charge. It was raining pretty heavy so Oxman and I stayed around and helped them sell stuff to the landscapers comming in to outfit themselves for tree climbing. One guy was a pressure washer

My BS is about 8 years old and I noticed the tubes were getting pretty sketchy last summer 2020. They have what I would refer to as micro-tears, and they're still working perfectly. But as soon as I get a break in my work sched I'll swap it out. Hopefully that'll happen before I get a break in the bungee!! (jk, it's at the top of my to-do list)

I purchased the new tubes and pouch, and these TreeBuzz threads are extremely helpful in getting me ready and confident to do the replacement. Great tip about cleaning the rods before installing the new rubber.
