Reep Schnur splicing method?

Thanks! Gave it a try tonight....First time splicing a double braid, if this is "easy" then I'm glad I didn't start with something harder!

Things I may have done wrong:
  • After it was nearly complete, I saw footnote 3 of the instructions: "Avoid snagging the core with the tip of the fid when it is passing through the cover....." -- I didn't check, so I don't know if this happened or not.
  • It was difficult to get the crossover-plus-some buried. I couldn't get it buried all the way to my mark "A".
  • In the eye, the cover seemed loose on the core. After clipping the eye to a tree branch and looping the free end around my foot and jumping on it a couple times, prior to lockstitching, it seems to be better. Not sure if that's expected or not.
  • The ~5 or so inches of the splice itself is very stiff... not sure if expected or not.
I don't think that I'd trust my skills with a climbing rope, especially on my first try, but hopefully this is good enough for my Hook!

I am no expert splicer, but the last double braid that I did was a 3/4 and all of my previous ones are 12-13mm. The 3/4 was considerably easier due to the larger size, I'd suspect that this being a smaller diameter would increase the diffculty a little bit.

I'd clip your eye directly to your bridge and hang on it for a few minutes. If it passes that test then I think your good to go, considering the hook itself is not rated for life support.

The splicing does get easier with practice
 
If you want to learn how to splice I suggest you go on ebay and buy rope scraps cheap. It is fun to make your own gear. I really enjoy splicing and I often look at my supplies and figure out what I can make. I also like to copy other products and make my own versions.

I will post my reep schnur splice results tonight. It was not as bad as I remembered but 1/2 inch double braid is much easier.

I used the new england ropes method (from this point forward known as yankee splicing) and it worked but I prefer the samson method. Same steps but a different order. You bury the cover first, taper it, then bury the core.

@Santiago Casanova Is there lock stitching through the rope under the whipping? I haven't seen that style in the instructions I've seen, just the style I did (2 lines of 3-4 stitches through the splice, at 90 degrees off) -- but your whipping looks cleaner.
 
I like to lock stitch first. Cut the thread. Then whip over the lock stitch. This way the whipping protects the lock stitch and if it were to come off it is disconnected from the lock stitch. I have tried many methods and they all work.
 
Hi Emi, I don't think they make it any more, it's not on FSE Robline's website. I recently bought a reel of it, and I am selling it in 50' units for $35.00, with the buyer paying for shipping. If you want more than one, it will be in one piece.

Just got off the phone with Jason from Maple Leaf Ropes. Absolutely amazing customer service and great prices. the website only offers 600' reels of Reep Schnur but if you speak with him he will cut it to any length. The best part was the price...under 80 cents a foot for 3/8ths. (Dont remember if it was 75 or 79 cents??) He informed me that this year they have really focused on the arborist industry and they are starting to carry more and more stuff and they also have connections with other vendors and suppliers and if it is not on their website there is still a very good chance he can get it and at great prices!...Canadians rejoice, finally a store to compete with the astronomical pricing of Universal field supply.
