Over the weekend of Feb 21-22 I hooked up with Greg Liu, Jesse Bawcum, Ken Ra, at the RRR for a rec climb and deadwood removal in a selected group of trees. David and Matt Driver came from Maryland to join in. Along with myself and the owner of the resort, Jack Harrison, it was quite the crew.
Three redwoods in the playground, 5,6,7 ft dia. X 150-200 ft tall were the target for Saturday. We set ropes and entered the canopys to remove deadwood and broken limbs. This was done as a safety measure in preparation for larger groups to come and climb the trees. Greg and Ken did the work in the largest tree, which really needed it the most. The tree I climbed didn't have much to do in it, as for the tree David and Matt worked in.
Speaking of David and Matt, they came out to climb a big tree and the ones at the resort are nice and large, but not huge. So Sunday I took the crew to the Renyolds Group just 5 minutes up the highway from the resort. Three trees, of which one is a double, an impressive 10 ft X 20 ft Dia. X 270 ft tall. The Renyolds Group met the Drivers expectations. That's what they come for. I made sure everyone got off the ground and went back to the resort to guide Jack Harrison up one of the trees in the playground.
Jack is just learning the ropes and needed personal instruction in a lesser tree. He did good, made it 155 ft without balling up, and, is becoming proficient with his gear and knots. It was just a quick up and down climb with Jack. Then we went to the Renyolds group to catch the climbers coming out of the big trees.
Everyone was stoked because the weather for the weekend was mild, just a bit damp, but no rain. At least during the climbs. It rained all the week before and everyday since. It was just luck.
I have another group of trees selected to deadwood and clean up. Probably some of the tallest in the park, exceeding 200 ft. for sure. Work is planned for other groups also.
Oh, Greg, Jack said he'll drop the services and let us cut that top out into the road. Now that will definetly be a Kodak moment.
Last, but not least, I finally found the HZK giant on the last day coming back from breakfast in Garberville. A single tree app. 14 ft X 250+. The exact measurements will be announced when taken. The HZK Giant has an extrodinaly large crown made up of limbs 2-3 ft in dia and reaching 50-60 ft out. Makes for a lot of room up there. I can't wait.
By summer enough trees at the resort should be cleaned up, ready and safe for large groups to enter them next fall.
Also, with new proposed realingments in the plan the Highway 101 bypass at Confusion Hill may miss the resort!!! Will find out for sure by next week.
What a great weekend. That's the update.
